Okay, he tries jamming a meat cleaver in the gear.

Do I make an attack roll? Melee or ranged?

Man, I don't know. Disable Device is more about traps and Dex-based. Sunder is more about attacking your enemy's weapon. The machine isn't actively defending (but it is moving slowly).

Is it in melee range? Then it should be pretty easy for Chef to jam his axe in there  and not necessitate an attack roll.

However, it's your game / call. Personally, I'd say it's Intelligence check just to see if Chef can jam his axe in the correct spot. He wants to try to make the gears stick or possibly break it.

I don't think it needs a check really.

The gears slow to a crawl.  The whole mechanism shudders under the load as it slowly presses the steel cleaver into the tooth form  and deflects the gears apart from one another.

Y'all on the bottom see the mechanism slow down.

Chef would be happy to lower a rope next turn.

So, has anyone contacted Matt or Josh about their turns? Or Daniel?

If we skip Lumenor and Korwin, it would then be Tuq'a turn...

Tuq is waiting for the rope and will pass to Chef

if the Eagle is still alive, this would be it's last turn I think, it will attack any goblins in range. the eagle could probably carry lil o' Tuq up, but alas, Tuq doesn't speak eagle

maybe Brandon would play? he actually posts Wink

Bronson. Not a common name, to be sure. I usually associate with the actor.

On another tangent... I was thinking that I wouldn't mind running Pathfinder some day, but using some optional rules from Pathfinder Unchained, and maybe Ultimate Campaign.

Sorry, didn't know if anything had changed yet.  For now, Korwin (who is basically useless I've discovered) will continue to just hold his action until he can do something useful

...and this isn't an indictment of Alan's game or anything like that. I went for a straight-up killer who has little other skills. That was my mistake

Actually Josh, the point of this game was to force you to try things that your crunch doesn't cover.  If the game only applies to the crunch, then we should just post algebra problems on this forum...  Just try something man.

Eagle thrashes the goblin up, who grins and then "pins" the eagle.  He is about to feast on its exposed breast when it winks out of existence.  The goblin looks shocked!

dude is set up to smash things with a hammer. Nothing more, nothing less. He has no skills to speak of and the stats are pretty weak.

If I had thought we'd be chasing somebody's friggin kid through a mill, I would have reconsidered my approach to this. A hack and slash fighter isn't really built to do much more than that (gee, what a shocking revelation)

If this is going to be weird puzzles and things more often than combat, I'll just drop out now. I'm not going to have the crunch argument with you anymore. I have my views of gaming, others have theirs, we seldom agree and I'm tired of arguing with people over something so trivial as this

I don't mean to argue.  I simply presented a game with an uncommon challenge.  We're always looking for a new spin on these games so I gave it a shot.

I was remembering that some of the best gaming fun I've had was in spontaneous adventures with no concessions to anyones crunch.  You have 3 feats crammed in to your longsword?  Too bad, here's a +3 flail.

Some of the coolest magic items in the book are ones we would never BUY with our starting 15th level treasure allowance.  We're ignoring a good 2/3 of the game by focusing on what we can calculate in our stats.  (No crunch could have prepared your character for the gin mill).

As for low level campaigns, I was quite prepared to take this one all the way to 20th, but I can't keep the pace up if you keep quitting.  And you would probably quit in a few of the scenarios as many of them are less calculable and rely on your willingness to experiment.

I quit earlier, I decided to give it a go to see what you had in mind. I'm just not enjoying it.

Don't blame me for the pace. I haven't done anything for over a week, I'm not slowing down anyone thank you very much.

Had I thought a skill monger would have been a better option, I might have gone with one of those. I didn't; I made a rather useless brute. My bad

Sorry, Josh.  Really wasn't trying to bag on you.
Just frustrates me; the whole point of the campaign was to push the players ouside of their crunches.  It wouldn't have mattered whether you played a skill guy or a bone crusher.

I was hoping you would explore how Korwin grows naturally apart from your list of feats and abilities and planned future development.
What would he REALLY DO in this situation, not what is he trained for.  If he would really stand at the bottom and complain he can't do anything, then that is fine.  So what if you've no ranks in 'climb'.  Gotta start somewhere.  Imagine Frodo complaining, "but my base attack bonus is too low for this encounter!"  Or Aragorn grieving his lack of cleric levels.

uh, Frodo was pretty useless in battle from what I remember and I don't recall Aragorn being a Cleric (Tolkein is so different from D&D it's not even a realistic comparison, IMO)

"Growing naturally apart from his feats and skills" ... I have no idea what this means. It's a collection of stats on a sheet of paper (word doc). Yes, I can play him however I want... he still is focused on just being a fighter. The class is the class man. Or would you have me try to play him as a bard? Wizard? Pink Space Marine? jocolor

My point was more that anything he can do outside of combat, for the moment, is heavily dependent on lucky dice. His last attempt to "do something" was nearly a rather horrid failure. Doing nearly anything non-combat oriented in this game systems is still heavily dependent on Skill checks, no matter how you want to mess with it. Korwin has garbage for skills. I should have thought of this, frankly. Again, my bad. Haven't played a Rogue in a long time... probably should have.

Frankly, Korwin is more in favor of saying 'screw the little shit, I'm just going to start hammering at this building until it falls'

... but ya'll is trying to be heroic and shit Twisted Evil

Dude... Tolkien is where D&D came from... scratch

Frodo was the main protagonist and yet "useless."  That is my point!

Rephrase:  how does the character learn and grow as he experiences new challenges for which he was unprepared?  If everything has a well crunched solution, then there's no story to tell.

Am I speaking english?  Jeez... Rolling Eyes

Its cool.  We will move on without Korwin.

I was going to cut off Korwin's arm and let you whine about it for a level until you guys could use goblin tech to make a wicked prosthetic.  But I can't do anything unpredictable cuz it interferes with y'all's cruches!

Oo, a goblin-tech prosthetic arm would be cool. I think after awhile Korwin would learn the technology and want to build his own limb. He's a blacksmith and all.

Why does crunching simply for combat cause problems for the story? I disagree with your characterization entirely.

I don't feel like arguing about the rest. It's your game, do what you want (of course)

fine, I'll stay... can we move this along though?  Or this mill is going to be brought down the old fashioned way... (this is the danger of responding to emails when one isn't quite awake yet... the prosthetic limb does sound rather intriguing and I totally forgot the blacksmith part of this character)

GM said to wait for the map, but now that we have it....

Tuq will attempt to fasten the rope to Ila's harness. Not sure what kind of check that is since I don't think Rope Use is a skill anymore

    Roll(1d20)+0:
    10,+0
    Total:10

apply whatever attribute\skill to that roll

Tuq secures the knot as the mechanism snags the portion of the rope bridging at an angle between the sun gear and planet gears.  It is a short lived impromptu winch that drags the wolf over the edge of the bevel pinion.  (Fortunately for the wolf it had been worn somewhat smooth by constant use).

    Is Tuq RIDING Ila?

Tug manages to keep his saddle as Ila flips her broadside over the edge of the gear and sprawls into a flat spin across the back of the gear.

No kill switch.  Good thinking, though.  OSHA would shut this down!

Using his knowledge of metallurgy and all things metal (ok, it's a stretch I know) Korwin will just make an Int. roll to see if he can figure a weak spot to hit with betsy (the hammer) to stop this thing in it's tracks.

    Intelligence roll?

    Roll(1d20)+1:
    20,+1
    Total:21

Ha ha!! Great time for a 20.

    so, anything occur to him?

well, that's two skill checks technically this round.  Do I still have an action left or do I need to wait another round? (I just realized that this guy is the medieval version of Jeremy Clarkson. All things can be fixed with a hammer. lol... though I'm sure this reference is lost on you unless you like Top Gear)

Knowledge and perception are passive skills.  You have your full round of actions available still.

The ancient rusted pin crumbles.  The whole assebly shakes, rocks and sags.  Years of rust and grime, however hold it together with limmited slipping.  The machine is effectively slowed.

    Move action?
