    Ok, so I get both the prof bonus AND advantage on Dex\Int, but neither for the other saves?

    I was mistaken, I thought you got prof on all saves and advantage on your 2 from class.  I think I got it now.

    I guess we'll ignore the second part, since it's the whole matrix experience, and particularly the deep dive, that is making him queasy. But I won't make you curl up catatonic in the corner, yet. Twisted Evil Nico has Disadvantage on checks and attacks, for the foreseeable future.


    "Man, it's like I said. We're going to talk to the Big Brain. The Emerald Queen,.Bathsheba. Whatever you want to call her... it," Kalyx explains. "There's quite a few AI in the system. We're going to visit one of the baddest."

    He's looking Nico over, frowning. The monkey sits on his shoulder and they're both wearing sunglasses.

    "I dunno, Nico, man. You don't looks so good. I'll take point... Besides, this sector is known for rogue programs and banditry, so be aware."

    Nico and Kalyx (with Mr. Bojangles riding on his shoulder) enter into the building. From the street it appeared to be the front lobby, but once they step inside, it looks like:

    You follow the way the specters had gone. The doorway leads into a large chamber. There are two closed doors in one corner of the room.

    The specters of four programmers stand at terminals at the far end of the room.

    "Madam," Kalyx says, "We're seeking a hacker by the name of Catwalk. This man is charged with finding her and I'm assisting him. Since she's a regular in etherscope, I figured you might know where to look."

    The holographic woman studies Kalyx, then Nico. "Is this true?" she asks the rogue.

    It is a fairly large room. The ceiling is 30' high. There are several barricades, like walls, that reach up to the ceiling.

    The door the investigators entered through has shut. There are two more closed doors at the far corner of the room.


    Initiative order:

    1- Tendrils
    2- Kalyx
    3- Programmers
    4- Nico


    Round 1

    ~The green tendrils have solidified now. They lash out at the investigators.

    Two tendrils attack Kalyx. One is a crit and he is grappled. No immediate damage, but he is pulled 25 feet towards the mouth of the creature. Mr. Bonjangles screams in his monkey way. The green mass chomps down on Kalyx and he takes 22 psychic damage.

    Two more tentrils attack Nico (50' reach). One miss and one crit (lucky dice today). Nico is grappled and reeled in towards the creature.


    ~Kalyx tries to break free with an opposed Strength check, but at Disadvantage. He fails and continues to be grappled, his legs are inside the creature's mouth, but where did the monkey go?


    ~The four programmers continue standing behind their terminals. The light around them shimmers and they shift into digital angels.

    GM - I checked the 5e rules and it says that I can use either Str (athletics) or Dex (acro) to escape a grapple.

    Nico would rather try to shoot the thing, since he had his gun out under his coat from earlier. I think PF\3.x allows you to make single hand weapon attacks - essentially put the barrel of the pistol up to the tentacle that is touching him and shoot at contact range. Or even just aim at the big mouth and fire.

    Let me know if that is an option, if not, Nico will use Dex\Acro to attempt to wriggle free

    I think it is the same roll either way, so here is a Dex + prof check at disadvantage, apply to as an attack or acro check as you see fit

    Grappled condition pretty much only stops you from moving. You can still attack. You're not even prone, though the grappler could force you into that.

    This particular monster ability (reskinned Roper) designates a Strength check at Disadvantage. Nico is already at Disadvantage due to being Frightened.


    ...Perhaps, the action in this encounter is igniting his adrenaline, burning away his fear. Make a Wisdom save at Disadvantage, please.


    Nico squeezes off a round from his gun, aiming at the tendril, but it's a miss.

    Is Nico done?


    Reminder: In the deep web, Nico is an avatar, and so using Int instead of Dex.

    Wisdom replaces Strength. I've updated The Matrix thread with relevant game mechanics.

    Nico is reeled in 25' to the creature, within reach of the gaping chompers. Green saliva and Kalyx's blood spatters on him as he draws near.

    GM - am I correct in assuming that green Roper would get an AoO if Nico tries to shoot at it? Would drawing a dagger also provoke an AoO? (since those are free actions in 5e)

    In 5e, you're only subjected to Opportunity Attacks when moving out of a hostile creature's reach.

    Using a ranged weapon (or ranged spell attack) when engaged with a foe garners Disadvantage on the roll.

    Drawing a dagger is free and clear.

    ok, thanks. Ouch, disadvantage is worse than an AoO..... so how would it work if a situation applied both Adv and Dis?

    for example, Nico could gain Adv being using an Inspiration pt (which would proc his sneak-attack bonus) but he is at Dis. (for shooting in melee or being fearful, last rd)

    Cancel - meaning NEITHER apply?  So spending a pt of Inpiration would negate the Dis but still not grant Adv.  Ok, that probably isn't worth it.

    You are correct, the tendrils can be attacked separately. That's a miss.

    And since Nico is grappled and can't move anywhere (unless you want to spend an IP to get a Bonus Action), it goes to...


    Round 3

    ~Bite attack at Nico. 14 to AC, I believe that's a miss (Nico's AC is currently 15, I think, accounting for INT instead of DEX)

    ~Kalyx is still down. Monkey is missing, probably eaten.

    ~Two of the angels have disappeared and two remain visible.

    No need for Nico to make death saves. His unconscious state was only a part of Bathsheba's plan.




    "Nico, awaken. Time is running out. Ah, there you are, back in the realm of consciousness. Excellent."


    Nico's eyes focus and he sees Kalyx, who is also awake and Mr. Bojangles too, stands groggily at his feet. They are still in the room from earlier. The angels seem to be gone, and so is the tendrilled creature. In it's place, a child stands watching them.



    "I needed to know that you were telling the truth, so far as you understand it," the child says simply. "I wanted something from you, and now I have it. Your codex is mine." The child smiles, but it seems unnatural somehow.

    "While you were unconscious, I analyzed your matrix feeds and recorded your brainwave signatures. Processing the results through a database of several billion random algorithms, I calculated your genetic code, within a degree of .00089% accuracy. As I speak, artificial replicas of your organic constituents are being rapidly grown in a controlled laboratory, far from here.

    "While these measures may seem extreme, that is the price for my assistance. I have determined the location of your missing hacker. You need only step through that door."

    add 1 tentacle-child-monster-AI to the list of people to kill.... if I ever make it back in Deep-shit Web..... although, I guess if he grows clones of me, maybe I can get some replacement parts, hmmmm.......

    *What this means in game terms, is that Nico will be allowed to add his Intelligence modifier to all Dexterity-based rolls. That includes attack rolls for ranged weapons and finesse weapons (and their damage rolls), and Dex skills like Acrobatics. He also adds the bonus to AC and Initiative modifier.

    This bonus works in prime reality and the matrix. You still add the Int modifier on top of whatever the base ability modifier happens to be.

    Whenever Nico makes a Dex-based roll, he must immediately follow with a Wisdom save (DC 12). If he fails the save, he gains 1 Taint Point. When a character's Taint equals their Wisdom score, they go insane.

    We can roll with one more encounter, if you guys want to. It's the big rescue scene. And I actually have in planned for your characters to meet up!

    Or we postpone it for after Star Wars. Not a huge deal to me either way.

    However, I don't think we need to run two concurrent sci-fi games, so I'll put this game on hold while SW is running.
