A door opens above and something bounces down the stairs in 3 hops landing in the fire. It looks like a skull.

BOOM! Coals and ashes scatter in a fiery flurry around the room. Some books are peppered. Some ignite.

Reflex saves for all. Lets also do a new initiative. Please keep up your stat blocks too.

Readied action is specific with a trigger. Held action is flexible bu is not a triggered interrupt.

Which are you doing? If readied, be specific. If "held", you go after goblins.

    batter up.....

Ian will attempt to clog the bottleneck, now that they are pushing through it.  Difficult terrain for climbing over a suit of armor at the bottom of a staircase?

Ian will make a Trip attack on the goblin, but since he doesn't have the feats, it gets an AoO on him.

    Trip

You can attempt to trip your opponent in place of a melee attack. You can only trip an opponent who is no more than one size category larger than you. If you do not have the Improved Trip feat, or a similar ability, initiating a trip provokes an attack of opportunity from the target of your maneuver.

If your attack exceeds the target's CMD, the target is knocked prone. If your attack fails by 10 or more, you are knocked prone instead. If the target has more than two legs, add +2 to the DC of the combat maneuver attack roll for each additional leg it has. Some creatures—such as oozes, creatures without legs, and flying creatures—cannot be tripped.

(after possible damage from goblin's AoO)

Ian attempts to step inside the reach of the goblin's halberd.  Falling to the floor, the goblin drags the hook along Ian's armor, catching the seam at the floating ribs.
6 damage.  Ian sees three more coming.  One fan's right and another left, each just 5'.  The one trapped on the bottom step has golden flames embossed onto his armor and carries a great axe.

Hey GM - I updated the map, but can you check the goblin positions for (a) bottom of the stairs, at the fire, tripped.  (b)  fan left  (c) fan right

unless I am mis-reading the map, which is possible.... there is only 1 square, let's call it L-14 at the bottom of the staircase, which is where Ian tripped (a).  (a) should also take damage from the fire, correct?

    (b) has to pass through L-14, over a fallen friend, taking fire damage.  L-14 is within the threat zone of both Ian and Chef.   In order for (b) to move again, after entering Ian and Chef's threat zone, both Ian and Chef get AoO before (b) can swing at all

    (c) also has to pass through L-14, over his friend, taking fire damage.  same calculus for threat zones, assuming either Ian or Chef has an AoO remaining.

can we get a clarification on the above issues before we go any further?

Ok, that was not clear at all, sorry.  You moved and attacked with them.  Please, in the future, just state that there is the opportunity for an AoO so we know.  I don't want to guess if there is one, stop and ask or guess if there is some reason there is not an AoO (like tumble or something).

If Chef drops the first one with his hit, Ian will swing at the 2nd.  If Chef doesn't drop the first one, Ian will also hit the first one.

    6 damage.

Can you clarify this action please?   Ian didn't move at all.  He had a readied action for when an enemy entered his threat zone.  L-14, at the base of the stairs is the first spot.  If the goblin entered L-14, he wouldn't be able to use his halberd against Ian, since it is a reach wpn and can't swing at an adjacent target.   If the goblin stopped on the stairs and swung at Ian from 10', then it never entered Ian's threat zone, so no readied action and no AoO from the goblin.

What weapons are the other 2 goblins using?

Ian would still have his readied action for the 2nd goblin coming down the stairs, which would be one of the two that fanned out.  Ian would get 2 swings at those guys, 1 readied and 1 AoO.

Just let me know if there are any changes to the map and which what actions of the goblins still occurred after the AoOs. I will update Ian, after I know which hits, if any, still happened.

Halberd study is tecnically NOT a reach weapon. My description of Ian's trip attempt was NOT intended to suggest either a technical "reach" or a move on Ian's part. Tripping is an up-close and personal manuver which is why it provokes AoO. I was trying to artfully illustrate Ian stepping in to sweep the leg and the goblin hitting with its AoO as it fell down.

The fire: my bad. Embarassed Seemed like common sense that an explosion would scatter the fuel and diminish the flames. I attempted to illustrate that, though poorly, it seems. scratch

AoOs: I come from a school of thought that these are heads-up plays that can be missed or waived by hesitation, so I didn't call them out. Basketball I will concede that forum gaming may be too confusing already for this. I will try to offer AoO as I see them in the future. (Let's not retcon those if someone goes more than a day to respond).

There will be times where I miss a rule or explanation, so please continue to hold me accountable. But I'm actually pretty sharp on anything that smells like 3e or 3.5e. elephant I had alot of books and read them constantly. Try to consider that when something seems to defy gravity. farao I may have reasons for things that I conceal in order to maintain some mystery or to simulate the fog of war.

There are 4 goblin's. The 3 on the board have halberds. The one stuck in the stairway has a great axe.

The combined might of Chef and Ian brings the goblin at Q-16 down.

    Theodras is up.

drunken oops, you are correct, Halberd is not a "reach" wpn.

The forum can be very confusing, since we can't see the path the models take, only their final destination.  It would be tedious for the GM to post the exact path, hex-by-hex, for each mob.  But we need that info to know if the mob went through our TZ (threat zone) or not.  Combine that with your "fog of war" comment and it is hard to know what is happening - is it what it looks like?  is there some mysterious mechanic at play that I don't know about?

I was waiting for the results of Chef's action, but I guess Ian can go.....

Ian will use a Lay on Hands (LoH) on himself, as a free action.  Ian cracks his neck back and forth and blows a snot rocket to clear his injuries.

Result of the throw of dice "3d6" :

    2 + 4 + 5 = 11

    Chris wrote:

    HP 39\39
    AC 18 (touch 10, FF 18)
    CMD 10+3+2 = 15
    LoH 5\7

Ian will take a swing at the goblin standing next to him with full power

Result of the throw of dice "1d20 +5" :

    9 + 5 = 14

    if that hits, damage

Result of the throw of dice "2d6 +6" :

    6 + 2 + 6 = 14

Ian is keeping the tripped goblin in the corner of his eye, watching to see if he tries to get up which would provoke an AoO.

Chef's deft slice glances off of the goblin's armored visor.

Ian nearly rings his own Bell on the other goblin's pauldron.

    No hits.

I see question marks for the end of the round. It's not Tarek's turn quite yet, right?

    Total:7

    Roll(1d20)+0:

Tarek whifs like a pro.  The goblin's hissing laughter is chilling.

    22 Tarek
    19 Lumenor
    17 Armored Goblins
    16 ??
    15 Theo
    14 Chef
    8 Ian
    3 ??

    Lumenor is up

Josh, don't object to your occupying partial squares to flank as long as it's at least a half square.

I actually meant the square directly to Tarek's right, but no matter.

The prone goblin rolls to 0-16 and stands up. (I think that provokes AoO for Chef and Theodras). The guy on the steps with the fancy armor steps down and takes an over-eager swipe at Ian. Ian's training saves him, but he may have lost a hair from his beard!

The goblin behind Ian turns on Tarek and slashes his halberd down hard through the rogue's crossed blades and finds cheek and shoulder for 5 damage.

Jeez, these things are very strong (and tall) for goblin's!

Clearly the goblin has miscalculated. He stands up into two blades and is gutted; though Chef applies a fillet technique. It never quite gets to its feet.

    Correct, Chris.

Sorry guys, Ever since replacing my phone I don't get any push notifications. I kind of got used to those. Forum keeps logging me out.

Matt, the fire seems to have done less damage than it should to the armored goblin's.
