    Characters:

    3rd lvl
    27 point ability buy
    No Tieflings.
    All Classes open.
    Backgrounds are in play.
    You belong to a well-known group of mercenaries. Whether your character is new or has been around for years is up to you. You can build the party to work in synergy but also be aware that at 3rd level, you are likely to be split up from each other and assigned in command positions as well as working together.

    Stay flexible on your origin story until I get some campaign world info posted.

    I'll describe this as story-driven, combat focused.

    update:

    I am still looking at Cleric, but now leaning more towards Warlock. There are some really neat\new class mechanics going on there that I want to explore.

    I am not sure of race. I really like Dragonborn and the look would be cool for a Warlock. 1/2 elf is the best racial package though...

    Yes, 5e. I can see how a sailor might end up with a merc company, and some watercraft knowledge may end up useful.

    Yes, the merc company is well known and the characters are not amongst top leadership. But they are not just random foot soldiers, either - having gained levels means that they have distinguished themselves.

    Bard would fit well!

    A) can this be +1 on a ring\trinket\? for ranged spell attacks or even just for 1 specific spell?

    Don't own the 5e PHB? Speak up so someone can email you a copy. The online SRDs for 5e are not particularly in-depth due to licensing.

    Great starts on characters. For those of you who would like to adjust your backstory to tie in a bit with the campaign world, see the Primer thread and feel free to ask questions. Everybody else, please see the primer thread anyway to get a general idea of where and what" is around you.

    The game will begin in the Gwopish Jungle near Nafjor. Your regiment has been retained to secure the Rough Road against further incursions from raiders.

    The party, being comprised of Regiment members who have distinguished themselves as above and beyond regular troops, are formed together into a "Shock Team". You are assigned difficult missions, or lead lesser troops in important, specialized tasks.

    More info to come in the opening thread.

    I'm hoping to get this started over the coming weekend.

    it seems like 5e allows for more out-of-combat healing for all classes, so I think Druid and Bard can cover the emergency triage in combat if needed

    I had thought about a Rogue for balance but I'm "rogued" out right now. Played one in Chris's mashup and in Alan's campaign.

    a couple questions for the GM:

    I see Healing Potions in the equipment section for 50gp.  Can we buy those with our starting (x3) money?

    Any other potions or scrolls we can buy?

    starting max HP?


    Criminal background gives me access to Tools: thieves tools.  As I read it, that means that I can disarm traps and pick locks as a rogue.  
    I looked at rogue and they don't have any specific "ability" other than access to using the tools.  They might be better, if they put their expertise in tools, but otherwise, I think I have those abilities.

    Is that correct?

    I think the notion of a 'balanced party' can be challenged with 5e, especially when there's some creativity in how encounters are approached.

    You may each start with having purchased 1 healing potion. They are subject to limited availability.

    No additional potions or scrolls unless you rolled it on the table - Refer to options for starting magic items.

    Anyone may use thieve's tools to disarm traps and pick locks, without a proficiency bonus, if they lack specific expertise.

    Matt, point of clarification. When you say max HP to start, you mean for us to take our highest possible hit die number plus CON bonus for each of our 3 levels, yes? (e.g. my hit die is d8 and CON bonus is +1, so my starting HP here would be 27)

    let's see.....

    Sleep = no save
    Hex = no save
    phantasmal force, minor illusion = INT save
    faerie fire, hellish rebuke = dex save

    misty step, eldritch blast, shillelagh, thaumaturgy = no save

    seems like a good start

    Matt... I have a rules question.

    I cannot find anywhere in the book where it says that two handed weapons get Str. Bonus + 1/2 (rounding down) like nearly every other game seems to have now. (not just PF)

    Is that a rule in here somewhere? I don't see it but I don't see a Feat or something else that covers it. It's not that much of an increase but everything helps... maybe they have it and it's hard to find, maybe there's a reason it's not in here.

    Thoughts?

    Correct, that rule is not included in 5e. There is a massive dmg bonus in the "Great Weapon Master" feat but the -5 to hit is a big obstacle at lower lvls. The big advantage of 2-handed weapons is their higher base dmg, in this system.

    yeah, I kinda figured that was part of it... that and the "versatile" trait that several weapons have.

    Chris & Joe, most of my spells are geared towards support of squad combat, but we can optimize for the task at hand anytime I get a long rest. I have the full druid list at my disposal. A little light on healing, but the potions will help and I can keep a stash of Goodberries as a last resort.

    I have time DMG pdf and can't find a magic item table anywhere. What page is it on? I don't even see it in the index. Can you screenshot it?
