Mike B just let me know he’s going to sit this one out. He’s buried at work for the next week or so and won’t have time to build a new character.

Don't forget, we all need to be able to sail a ship. The water vehicles proficiency and the maneuvering rules cover several tasks that must be performed simultaneously in order to keep a ship moving. Piloting and trim of sails appear to be the main tasks.

    Piggybacking off of Alan's post...

Chris, I was given herbalist kit proficiency twice in my build. Is it acceptable to switch one of those to navigators tools proficiency?

that's a pretty narrow list... no mention of Charles Vane, Benjamin Hornigold nor Henry Avery. And frankly, Calico Jack Rackham, Mary Read and Anne Bonney were a bit of a joke... they were operating at the tail end of the "pirate age" and got caught due to their crew (and most likely them as well) being drunk and rather easily captured.

Sorry, been reading a couple books about this period of history lately...

Talk about a shitty time to be an English sailor... yikes!

Two or 3 capable navigators is nice. But every crew member will have to heave the lines to trim the sails when we tack to come about in a battle. I'm just recommending the water vehicles proficiency for everyone, but if a couple crewmen are just making raw ability checks, it won't be the worst thing in the world, I guess. They can be in training...

The lines can be heaved by any common bilge rat. I can billow the sails with my words, knowing what weather and wind lies ahead and changing the tides of the ocean itself. These hands need not be sullied by the lines.

I am glad someone went this route, I think it's really cool to use weather magic in this way cheers

I think we are just waiting on Matt's build to get going.

feel free to roleplay the discussion of your plan, we can at least get that part going while Matt finalizes his stats. we don't need stats (most likely) until combat starts

I tried to choose spells that mostly fit thematically with nautical adventure. We can consider the spells posted to be my default preparation spell group. I will edit them on my char post when I swap them out in addition to mentioning it in the encounter threads.

    spell selection looks solid.

    no Gust of Wind?

I know it doesn't say exactly how strong the wind is, but for simplicity sake, I would say it adds +1 speed or +10ft in combat
for example, a Cog has a speed of 2 or 20ft in combat

so gust of wind would increase the speed to 3\30 or reduce enemy speed by the same if applied as a debuff

Brilliant. I want sure if it was strong enough to allow a mechanical bonus to sea raft, but if the DM says it does, so be it.

I'll def be swapping that out for something.

Gust of Wind is barely usable otherwise, we might as well have some fun with it in this setting

Hey GM - how much movement, and what rolls required, to get up the side of the cog?

Athletics to climb, let's call it 20ft from the water to get over the deck rails.  15ft to climb up far enough to get LoS\LoE on red pirates

Climbing is 1/2 move speed, like difficult terrain, unless you have a climb speed

DC 15 athletics since there are no good hand holds, the side of the boat is wet, you are wet.... unless you find something to climb up Rolling Eyes

    DC 15 athletics to climb

I was just pointing out that 5e has no "take 10" rule and I am trying to stay as close to true 5e as possible, since that was a request to keep the rules familiar to all (except me, cuz I barely know 5e, lol, but I learn rules best by running them)

FWIW I don't object to "take 10", it's the precursor idea to passive perception, but 5e relies more on dice rolls and less on static modifiers to determine results.

trying to make sense of using Stealth in 5e....

PF and 3.x had using stealth as a free action but it reduced movement rate by 50%

5e has "Hide" as an action, but it doesn't directly reduce movement rate, so you get your full movement rate when you move + action Hide

effectively, this is the same thing in a different way, since you could double move in PF while sneaking

I think calling the skill "Stealth" and the action "Hide" is a bit confusing. They should have just called the action "Use Stealth" since it is includes hiding in 1 spot, moving silently and both, in their 'sneak past guards' example

anyways, let me know if you guys play the stealth rules differently. I am not trying to be a rules lawyer, just understand the mechanics in 5e

RE: the stealth and strength rolls I just made to scale the cogside. I rolled str to see if the desired climb was successful and the stealth roll was to represent how quietly I did so.

I'm fine with the result and ruling, but in the future it's probably best to wait for a roll request I'm sure. I could've also asked if all that were possible, but I wanted to keep the train rolling.

no worries, I had given Matt the athletics check DC and you were just mirroring his actions. I am 100% fine with you guys just making the rolls you know you need to make, no need to wait for me to ask.

the readied action was the only issue and that seems to have resolved itself anyways. you could state it as a conditional, "if I make the climb, then I will ready an action" and give all the rolls needed up front. or "if I make the climb and I can, I will ready an action" < that's how I interpreted your post anyways.

I was just trying to give you the benefit of the doubt. I try to be as lenient as I can and let players do what they want.

    game on...

    fight updated

I am kinda slow on the weekends, sorry. I spend most of my work days at a computer and try to spend as little time on one at home as possible (not counting video games, of course)

Regarding action economy per turn, reactions for example. I would say they reset at top of initiative rather then on character initiative, as a player in initiative who has not yet taken a turn in a combat could use a reaction. What's your ruling on the mechanic so we all know, Chris?

Additionally, any specific exclusion to the general rule is spelled out (i.e. until the end of their next turn, at the beginning of their turn, etc.)

thanks for asking.  I can see your point about them resetting at the top of the round, but I am going to stick with the official rules as much as possible

    PHB pg 190

    R e a c t i o n s
Certain special abilities, spells, and situations allow
you to take a special action called a reaction. A reaction
is an instant response to a trigger of some kind, which
can occur on your turn or on someone else’s. The
opportunity attack, described later in this chapter, is the
most common type o f reaction.

When you take a reaction, you can’t take another one
until the start o f your next turn.
    If the reaction interrupts
another creature’s turn, that creature can continue its
    turn right after the reaction.

Yep, that's the right call. I hadn't bothered to look it up. So a character could potentially take 2 reactions during the first round of combat, but only during the first round of combat and only if one of the reactions occurred before their turn. Right?

Anthony, Evan and their friend Cooper finished clearing out the Cragmaw goblin caves and reached 2nd level today. Then they picked a fight with the local bullies, the Redbrands, that are extorting the mining camp town of Phandolin.
