Isn't there something in his way of attacking me? A mast or barrel or whatever that is?

Fine, send the Firebolt at Rogan

"Eat fire you you son of a whore!"

    same hit and damage

    affraid oh bugger!

sorry, you are correct, doh!  GM is failing at map use 101

Rogan cannot target you.  AoO doesn't work until you try to leave his reach, not just when you move within his threat zone (different from PF\3.x) and there is a 40ft mast blocking his attack.  dagnabbit  Rolling Eyes

Ok, a bit of a retcon then is in order here, my apologies.   Sam does manage to duck away from Rogan as well as the Worg and pirate via disengage.

Sam makes it to G-9 as intended and torches the Witch for 29 fire damage!  She burns up in a puff of smoke as she only had 20 hp left.

    Crispy is up

    Pyriannix "Crispy"

    HP: 52 (37)
    AC: 17
    Ki: (3/3)
    Sorcery Points (5/2)
    Spells:
    1st: (4/4)
    2nd: (3/2)
    3rd: (2/1)

    Inspiration:1

Crispy gets a little altitude to +15', eyeing that orc's anchor and chain, and swoops to J-8 +15' (35/60 flying). He rotates into a head down position as he arrives on station, arms outstretched, and blasts the mangy curs with Burning Hands (cast at 2nd level), centered on J-8 +0', encompassing the villains at I-7, J-9, and K-9 in his AoE.

    Burning Hands
    1st-level evocation
    Casting Time 1 action
    Range Self (15ft cone)
    Components V S
    Duration Instantaneous
Flames shoot from your fingers in a 15-foot cone. Any creature in range must pass a Dexterity save or take 3d6 fire damage. They take half as much on a success.

Flammable objects are also ignited if they are in range and aren't worn or carried.

At Higher Levels: The damage increases by 1d6 for each slot level above 1st.
    Damage:
Result of the throw of dice "4d6" :

    5 + 6 + 3 + 6 = 20

Crispy banks hard right and cranks out a three quarter barrel roll to reorient himself as he streaks away to E-13 +15'(60/60 flying). He casts a glance down at the water to make sure that pesky bard isn't reconsidering his choice to flee...

nice move!  BH is usually thought of as a flat plane, like a fan, but it IS truly a CONE and when aimed down, it covers a MUCH bigger AoE
    damn engineer wizards......

I think the cone would look like this from above, which is 15ft on all sides

in that case, Rogan, his worg and the pirate behind the table are all hit, while avoiding the 2 tiefling whores

    spell DC 14

the pirate is only a 1st level rogue, so he will burn to death regardless of making\failing his save

    Worg Dex save

Result of the throw of dice "1d20 +2" :

    11 + 2 = 13

just barely misses, Worg takes 20 fire, but is still alive (barely).  sniff, sniff.... smells like burnt hair

Rogan, being the Barbarian that he is, has Danger Sense, so he gets ADV on Dex saves that he can see

Result of the throw of dice "1d20 +2" :

    2 + 2 = 4

Result of the throw of dice "1d20 +2" :

    20 + 2 = 22

Rogan takes half damage of 10, but Crispy notices that the fire seems to have less effect than he would have hoped as it gets further reduced by the Bear's Rage to 5

Crispy can still see the Bard in the water

    Whitey wrote:

The base of the Main Mast and the overturned gaming table are also caught in the blast and ignite!   Twisted Evil
fire will spread on Crispy's turn

Unfeathers cries out in alarm, "<sqwak>  Ladybug, Ladybug, fly away home.  Your  boat is fire and.... <sqwak>  Fire?  Fire! <sqwak>"

Unfeathers takes off and begins circling the boat from the air.

    Witch is ash
    pirate is ash

at 8, the bard keeps swimming away from the Cog, though he is not a competent swimmer and makes little progress

at 4, the Ranger decides that he can't target Big Bird up in the rigging, so he changes targets to the helicopter gunship.  It takes 3 rds to reload the ballista, so he moves to the other one and aims at Crispy....

Result of the throw of dice "1d20 +7" :

    18 + 7 = 25

    hit!

Result of the throw of dice "3d10 +3" :

    2 + 8 + 6 + 3 = 19

    19 piercing from the ballista

at 3, the barely up Worg runs up to G-10 and bites at Sam's heels

Result of the throw of dice "1d20 +5" :

    4 + 5 = 9

    miss

at 0, the tiefling whore nearest the fire decides that she has had enough, pay or no pay.  She runs and jumps off the ship into the water and begins swimming for shore

    Deflect Missiles
Starting at 3rd level, you can use your reaction to deflect or catch the missile when you are hit by a ranged weapon attack. When you do so, the damage you take from the attack is reduced by 1d10 + your Dexterity modifier + your monk level.
If you reduce the damage to 0, you can catch the missile if it is small enough for you to hold in one hand and you have at least one hand free. If you catch a missile in this way, you can spend 1 ki point to make a ranged attack with the weapon or piece of ammunition you just caught, as part of the same reaction. You make this attack with proficiency, regardless of your weapon proficiencies, and the missile counts as a monk weapon for the attack, which has a normal range of 20 feet and a long range of 60 feet.

    Roll(1d10)+6:
    3,+6

    Righty then

    Sjon Barker Druid 8
    HP: 57/57
    AC: 16
    Slots:4/3/2/2 (4/3/3/2 max)
    Wild Shape: 1 (2 max)

The giant eagle flies from his perch on the mizzenmast to a similar elevation on the bowmast where he can find a safe landing point for his transformation (up to dm advice and using as much movement as necessary). Sjon then reverts to his human form using a bonus action.

He sees the fire on deck from Crispy's handiwork, as per usual, and reaches down to squeeze a bit of water from his shirt into the palm of his hand. As he stretches his hand down towards the anchor-wielding orc, his vocalizations mimic the sound of a crashing wave and he casts Tidal Wave (L3) atop Rogan. After the impact of the focused column of water lands upon their murderous adversary, it spreads out to quench the flames before vanishing.

    Tidal wave damage roll:
    Result of the throw of dice "4d8" : 6 + 7 + 5 + 6 = 24

    Tidal Wave
    A Elemental Evil spell
    Conjuration
    Level: 3
    Casting time: 1 Action
    Range: 120 feet
    Components: V, S, M (a drop of water)
    Duration: Instantaneous

You conjure up a wave of water that crashes down on an area within range. The area can be up to 30 feet long, up to 10 feet wide, and up to 10 feet tall. Each creature in that area must make a Dexterity saving throw. On a failed save, a creature takes 4d8 bludgeoning damage and is knocked prone. On a successful save, a creature takes half as much damage and isn’t knocked prone. The water then spreads out across the ground in all directions, extinguishing unprotected flames in its area and within 30 feet of it, and then it vanishes.

Sorry 'bout the delay, guys, thought it would time out better. Detoured to see an Army buddy I haven't seen since '05 on the way to fish with the Scouts at Philmont ranch in NM. Decided along the drive that unless something earth-shattering happens in the next months, I am moving out here when my lease runs out next June. Nothing keeping me in the midwest anymore. Time to cut the BS and live where I've wanted to be for so long.

ok, let's resolve the last 2 in sequence here, starting with Sjon

Rogan has ADV on Dex saves that he can see as a Barb

Result of the throw of dice "1d20 +2" :

    6 + 2 = 8

Result of the throw of dice "1d20 +2" :

    15 + 2 = 17

    whew, just made it.

Rogan just barely keeps his feet under him and takes 1/2 damage, so 12, then half again from Bear Rage, so 6

Sjon does manage to extinguish both of Crispy's fires cheers

Sjon has plenty of movement, no worries. He is up in the rigging of the main mast, the crow's nest would be a easy spot for a human

:study:Ok, sorting through some overlapping rules here.....

Rogan has Polearm Master feat which lets him make an AoO when someone enters his reach
But Renda uses Disengage, so he doesn't provoke attacks of opportunity on the way in to reach Rogan

Renda makes 4 attacks vs AC 16

    1a hits
    2b hits
    3b hits
    4a hits

Rogan takes 10,8,10,8 reduced to 5,4,5,4 so 18 damage total  (he seems lightly injured only after 4 bites, tidal wave and fire)

cheers THANK YOU for including the DC 13 in your info

Rogan has ADV on CON saves as a Barb and an 18 CON for +4.  If he makes the 1st save, I won't roll the second ADV part

Renda had to get adjacent to Rogan to make his bite attacks.  Renda then attempts to leave Rogan's threat zone while still enjoying Disengage.  Rogan did not use his Reaction against Josh, since Sam was blocked by the Mast, so he still has a Reaction available.  Just like the scenario with Sam, Rogan has the Sentinel feat.

Renda has resistance to slashing, so he takes 7 dmg. Play-by-post kinda sucks for this kind of thing I don't want to jam play up too much, but I'd really like to see if anyone has a bonus action buff/debuff that they are going to throw at this before we move forward...

and BTW, I'll be out in the backcountry of NM till Sunday night, so no internet. Please have another party member handle rolls I need done in the interim. Renda will fight as agressive as possible all toweards Rogan, here is current stat block -

    AC: 18

Advantage on DEX saves vs things I can see.

as for Buff\Debuff.... it's unlikely anyone could do anything on Renda's turn.  The only thing they can do is use Reaction.  You can only use a Bonus action on your own turn.

    B o n u s A c t io n s
Various class features, spells, and other abilities let you
take an additional action on your turn called a bonus
    action.

    Cutting Words
Also at 3rd level, you learn how to use your wit to distract, confuse, and otherwise sap the confidence and competence of others. When a creature that you can see within 60 feet of you makes an attack roll, an ability check, or a damage roll, you can use your reaction to expend one of your uses of Bardic Inspiration, rolling a Bardic Inspiration die and subtracting the number rolled from the creature’s roll. You can choose to use this feature after the creature makes its roll, but before the DM determines whether the attack roll or ability

Hawkes will reduce the damage of Rogans 3rd attack.

Result of the throw of dice "1d6" :

    3

    Cap'n Hawkes
    AC 17
    Hp 63/48

    Water Breathing

    Spell save 14
    Passive perception 14
    Passive insight 17

Assuming that the bowsprit is difficult terrain, Hawkes can still step or hip over it and trot to the starboard stairs.

“Rogan, it's time to settle up for what you did to Gundren!”

Att 1 Rolling "1d20 +8" (also using a maneuvering attack to give Sam 15’  of movement).

    12 + 8 = 20. Rapier at Rogan

    Rolling "1d8" superiority die

    7

    Rolling "1d8 +5" rapier damage

    6 + 5 = 11+7=18

Att 2 Result of the throw of dice "1d20 +8" :

    18 + 8 = 26

Result of the throw of dice "1d8 +5" : rapier damage

    2 + 5 = 7

Att 3 As a bonus action, Hawkes slashes with the cutlass.
Result of the throw of dice "1d20 +7" :

    17 + 7 = 24

Result of the throw of dice "1d6 +4" :

    5 + 4 = 9

If Rogan doesn't drop, Hawkes will use action surge. Hawkes draws his cutlass while attacking twice with his rapier:

    Rolling "1d20 +8" 2 times

    1: 19 + 8 = 27
    2: 9 + 8 = 17

    Damage if those hit:

    Rolling "1d8 +5" 2 times

    1: 5 + 5 = 10
    2: 5 + 5 = 10

Maneuvering Attack. When you hit a creature with a weapon attack, you can expend one superiority die to maneuver one of your comrades into a more advantageous position. You add the superiority die to the attack’s damage roll, and you choose a friendly creature who can see or hear you. That creature can use its reaction to move up to half its speed without provoking opportunity attacks from the target of your attack.

    Sjon Barker Druid 8
    HP: 57/57
    AC: 16
    Slots:4/3/1/2 (4/3/3/2 max)
    Wild Shape: 1 (2 max)
    Spell save DC: 16

    Conditions: water breathing

I'm sure Sjon hears the squawking of Unfeathered as he has been up in the rigging with him recently, and since he has a bird's eye view (so to speak) he will scan across the water below.

    Perception roll:
    Result of the throw of dice "1d20 +5" : 7 + 5 = 12

Still have movement and bonus action pending result. Does that perception roll use up Sjon's action?

Lol, it would be hard to miss 3 monstrous tentacles. That was more for suspenseful narrative not mechanical purposes, carry on

And yes, everyone can hear Unfeathers, he isn't a quiet bird

    Slots:4/3/1/2 (4/3/3/2 max)
    Wild Shape: 1 (2 max)
    Spell save DC: 16

    Conditions: water breathing

Sjon looks down to see something in the water and sounds the alarm. "Look alive mates, tentacles in the water around the ship! Give the bunny a squeeze before things get hairy." The crew is aware that Sjon uses this spirit to provide healing when moving through it's space. He casts L2 Healing Spirit below him at H7 using his bonus action. He will then use his movement to find a perch along the mast 25' above the deck in the rigging or on the ladder.

    Healing Spirit
A spell from Xanathar's Guide To Everything
    Conjuration
    Level: 2
    Casting time: 1 Bonus Action
    Range: 60 feet
    Components: V, S
Duration: Concentration, up to 1 minute

You call forth a nature spirit to soothe the wounded. The intangible spirit appears in a space that is a 5-foot cube you can see within range. The spirit looks like a transparent beast or fey (your choice). Until the spell ends, whenever you or a creature you can see moves into the spirits space for the first time on a turn or starts its turn there, you can cause the spirit to restore ld6 hit points to that creature (no action required). The spirit can’t heal constructs or undead. As a bonus action on your turn, you can move the Spirit up to 30 feet to a space you can see.

A chi-pet bunny appears on the deck at H-7.  Whether you squeeze your bunny or not is up to you, not that's there anything wrong with it

@Joe  Sjon moved and the Healing Spirit is only a Bonus Action to cast.  I am going to take Rogan's turn since it seems like you finished, but you can still take an Action if you want

Rogan is not a smart fellow, but even he can tell when the tide has turned against him.  He moves to L-6 with the smile of someone that knows a secret.  Rogan drops his Anchor Chain and draws a strange looking dagger as he moves

    map updated

Hawkes and Renda can make an Opportunity Attack on him as he leaves their threat zone if they have a Reaction remaining

Rogan is not finished, just giving time for AoO

Chris, that was Sjon's entire turn unless he couldn't finish his movement, in which case he would use his action to dash in order to complete his entire movement

Edit: in case it needs to be specifically mentioned, the bunny will heal all of the party and none of the enemies. This will be the standard use of the spell.

Edit2 to the party: pass through the bunny's space to receive a small font of healing. This can be done every turn until the spell ends.

Rogan's CON save DC 13 vs Stun
as a Barb he has ADV on CON saves

Result of the throw of dice "1d20 +4" :

    6 + 4 = 10

Result of the throw of dice "1d20 +4" :

    4 + 4 = 8

affraid it seems Rogan's luck has finally run out

Rogan takes 5 damage and is stunned!

    St u n n e d
    • A stunned creature is incapacitated (see the
condition), can’t move, and can speak only
    falteringly.
    • The creature automatically fails Strength
    and Dexterity saving throws.
    • Attack rolls against the creature have
    advantage.

    Since it's still Rogan's turn.....

Rogan sways slightly as he stands in disbelief of his pending defeat.  He had the Kraken blade partially raised, as if going for his own throat.  He catches his own reflection in the mysterious dagger.

He is consumed by his memories as his life's choices replay like shadows from a fire dancing on the wall of a cave.

The rest of the party all just happened to be looking at Rogan at that exact moment.  You can each see Rogan raising the Kraken blade towards his own throat just as Renda STUNS him.  The blade flashes briefly.  Could it be moonlight?  The moon is known by sailors to have strange powers.  Could it be some other magic at work? Could it be the hand of the Gods?  The party isn't sure.  You don't know why you are meant to see this, but you feel that it is important, somehow.

The party bears ghost-like witness to Rogan's life as he watches it......

You are standing on a beach.  The wind blows fiercely from offshore.

You see a much-younger Rogan staring into the wind, defiant of the elements.

He is dressed more like a viking than a pirate.  You can see many clans of orc raiders encamped behind him on the beach, as if waiting

an Orc Shaman is attempting to appease their Gods with the sacrifice of many beasts

The winds continue to blow against Rogan.

The shaman tells Rogan that he must make a greater sacrifice to pay for good winds, if he wishes to sack the Dwarven Fortress-City of Frostheim.

Rogan calls for his only child Ragash, his son and heir, to be brought forth

Rogan leads his son up to the rocky cliffs overlooking their camp and the ocean.  The wind blows in their faces.

Rogan unsheathes the Kraken dagger, given to him by his father to make sacrifice to Verex, God of Plunder and the Seas. (thanks for the idea Matt!)

Rogans opens Ragash's throat with the Kraken blade.  His young blood turns the foam below red.  Rogan can hear cheers rise up from the beach.  The winds fall instantly quiet and the waves are still.

Rogan and his armada sail to the Dwarven Fortress-City of Frostheim

Frostheim is home of the Dwarf King Dondren.  The party sees an immediate resemblance to their departed Captain Gundren in the old King's face.

After a long and bloody seige, Frostheim finally falls to Rogan's raiders.  With his last breath, the old King Dondren curses Rogan and his raiders, "As long as sons of Frostheim sail freely, you shall wander the seas forever."

The waves swallow Rogan's remaining armada before they can return home with their plunder.  The wealth of Frostheim was indeed a great sacrifice to the Dwarven God of the Sea Oreideon.

Rogan's ship alone survived.  He became consumed with killing every dwarf he encountered at sea.  Gundren's death has led the party to Rogan.  His fate is now in your hands......

In a flash, the party's consciousness returns to the present moment. You are all back on Rogan's cog. He is stunned, staring into the Kraken blade as if memorized.

    Hawkes attacks twice

    Rolling "1d20 +8" 2 times

    1: 11 + 8 = 19 rapier
    2: 19 + 8 = 27 rapier

    Damage:
    Rolling "1d8 +5" 2 times

    1: 2 + 5 = 7
    2: 7 + 5 = 12

If Rogan drops, "You are free of your burden old man.  You can thank Gundren for that when you see him."

Either way, Hawkes bolts for the tiller, sheathing his rapier and dropping his cutlass.

"Lady do not flee," to the whore.  "Sutter Hawkes has never robbed an honest whore of her wages!"

"Renda, get Rogans knife.  And the female is not food.  She is breeding stock."

"Crispy, toast that mutt and weigh anchor."

"Sam, set the mainsail and trim leeward!  Sjon, I need a wave astern and a wind to the port.  We can slingshot the bay and out with the wind!  Move it before that sea monster sees we are not it's clan! (Reference Renda's philosophy)."

I love the way Hawkes is taking charge, lets roll with that!

Hawkes runs his blade through Rogan. Though stunned, Rogan manages a faint smile of relief. Hawkes catches a glimpse of rocky cliffs and sandy beaches in Rogan's eyes as they go dim. Rogan's body crumbles to dust. Hawkes wonders just how old he was.....

Lets go ahead and stay in a loose combat turn for now. Everyone gets 1 turn and then the Krakken clock ticks down. You have a very short time to escape.

The whore cowers as she is used to being mistreated.

@Alan - lets roll with Hawkes taking charge. Direct the crew specifically what to do, including what dice rolls to make and what roles to take on the ship.

Regardless of where we were in initiative, everyone now has 1 turn, under Hawkes command to work as a crew. That still means 1 move, 1 action, etc

Unfeathers flies up to the crow's nest, "<sqwak> Rogan is dead! Long live Captain Hawkes! <sqwak>"

Otherwise Sam will move to wherever the Main sail is for now and wait for a GM ruling
