What is Sam doing?
There are 5 chests. Is Sam trying to pick a lock? Disarm a trap that he doesn't know is there?
Search for traps is Investigate (INT), each chest would need a separate roll.
Pick lock would be Thieves Tools, each chest needs a separate roll
Disarm traps is also Thieves Tools, each chest needs a separate roll, but the trap has to be found first before it can be disarmed.
**edit Sam can make 1 Investigate roll to examine all 5 chests, in an effort to save time. it takes 5 rounds***
@Josh - do you want to use the 17 you rolled? just adjust the modifier to Investigate (INT) if you do

yes there is!
Action = HELP
H e l p
You can lend your aid to another creature in the
completion o f a task. When you take the Help action,
the creature you aid gains advantage on the next ability
check it makes to perform the task you are helping with,
provided that it makes the check before the start of
your next turn.
Alternatively, you can aid a friendly creature in
attacking a creature within 5 feet of you. You feint,
distract the target, or in some other way team up to
make your ally’s attack more effective. If your ally
attacks the target before your next turn, the first attack
roll is made with advantage.
Hawkes could help Sam and give him ADV on the roll

my apologies.
Ok, Sam will carefully examine each chest, looking for any sign of traps.
Yes, just use the roll from before. It would be a 22 in that case. (Investigate)
Let me know when to roll the remove traps part of this

no worries!
Sam and Hawkes examine the 5 chests, which appear to be part of a set. They are all made from the same wood and share a similar design - they are covered in runes. Each chest also has a set of symbols burned into the lid in a circular pattern. There appears to be a finger-hole offset from the circular pattern.
the chests look like this
but with this type of circular shaped pattern and finger hole on the lid
Sam suspects that the chests are magically locked, much like a runic-combination, but not trapped, unless the code is entered incorrectly
Sam identifies 5 runes of 30+ that show up on each of the chests. These 5 runes are in the field of runes off to the side in the field of 30+ runes.
Touching a rune correctly side makes it appear inside the circle and glow red. Sam determines that he has to enter the 5 runes, in the correct sequence, to unlock the magical chests.
like this
Perhaps there are other clues on the ship that will help him decode the runic locks.....

that's one way to get some attention.....
The Siren's Song goes quiet. Out of the front door strolls a massive bugbear carrying his whore in his hand like a doll. Crispy recognizes Rogan's first mate, Bahar the Glutton.
Bahar is still chewing on what looks like a roasted bison's leg. Other patrons and working girls file out of the brothel from side doors to watch the show, like middle schoolers after gym class. They have a look of expectant entertainment in their eyes.
Bahar speaks to his audience, "Look, lads! This meat even cooks itself, har har" The crowd responds with murmurs of laughter and anticipation.

Crispy catches Bahar off guard. But then, Bahar was never very good at chess or even tic tac toe.
"The ship is mine? Yes... The ship is MINE! You hear that lads?"
Several of the rowdies call out in support, "Aye, aye, Cap'n Bahar!"
Bahar points his bison leg threateningly at the flying draconian, "Are you sure you don't want to fight me for it?" The crowd murmurs its approval, clearing spoiling for some action.

I know we aren't on a combat map yet, but if I am adding it up correctly, Crispy is +35 up and 35 away from the door of the brothel where he started. For the sake of simplicity, let's say he is back near the dock and the launch at this point.
Bahar strolls forward still carrying his whore and chomping on his now charred bison leg. The mob of patrons and whores follows him. He grunts something in Orcish (fire, if you speak orcish). Bahar doesn't fight fair

Crispy skims the surface of the bay like an osprey on the hunt. He sees a single empty launch tied up.
sure, go ahead and roll perception
The Cog is about 100m out in the bay. You can all see Crispy but yelling across a football field would be noisy.

E n s n a r in g St r i k e
1st-level conjuration
Casting Time: 1 bonus action
Range: Self
Components: V
Duration: Concentration, up to 1 minute
The next time you hit a creature with a w eapon attack
before this spell ends, a w rithing mass o f thorny vines
appears at the point o f impact, and the target must
succeed on a Strength saving throw or be restrained by
the magical vines until the spell ends. A Large or larger
creature has advantage on this saving throw. If the
target succeeds on the save, the vines shrivel away.
While restrained by this spell, the target takes 1d6
piercing damage at the start of each of its turns. A creature
restrained by the vines or one that can touch the creature
can use its action to make a Strength check against your
spell save DC. On a success, the target is freed.
Renda can see the mob appear at the dock following Crispy. Renda also sees the seaweed-like vines ensnare Crispy. Since its a flying spell, not wings, Crispy's speed is 0 but he doesn't fall.
INITIATIVE!
I will get the map up shortly, but the party is about 300 ft out in the water on the cog

Starting at 3rd level, you can use your reaction to deflect or catch the missile when you are hit by a ranged weapon attack. When you do so, the damage you take from the attack is reduced by 1d10 + your Dexterity modifier + your monk level.
If you reduce the damage to 0, you can catch the missile if it is small enough for you to hold in one hand and you have at least one hand free. If you catch a missile in this way, you can spend 1 ki point to make a ranged attack (20/60 feet) with the weapon or piece of ammunition you just caught, as part of the same reaction. You make this attack with proficiency, regardless of your weapon proficiencies, and the missile counts as a monk weapon for the attack.
Roll(1d10)+6:
2,+6

Damage reduced to zero. Crispy don’t play that. He will spend a Ki point to huck the arrow back at the sniper, and burn his inspiration point to give himself advantage:

13,+6
Total:19
Roll(1d20)+6:
16,+6
Total: 22
Damage: Roll(1d4)+1:

So, since he effectively negated the hit is he still affected by Ensaring Strike?

nice move hothead!
I was thinking about this when I posted the Ensnaring Strike wording. I can see an argument either way, but at least as I read it "The next time you hit a creature with a weapon attack before this spell ends" it becomes ensnared. It doesn't say, "the next time you damage a creature"
Whether you negate the damage in some way only mitigates the damage, not the effect of the spell. The sniper eats his own arrow back, however, he is not ensnared as the effect triggered at the first "hit". A spell like shield or something that turned the "hit" to a "miss" would negate the effect of the spell too.

So, Crispy is or is not dealing with being ensnared? I would argue that while both effects include the word “hit”, it also says that when the damage goes to zero the pc “catches” the projectile, thereby changing the definition of what happened as a result of the reaction and superseding the original action. But just in case:, STR save:

@Matt - I guess it's up to you if you want to participate or not in the combat. Since Mike is in combat, I wanted to keep things moving at an even pace, so I included everyone else in initiative as well. Some folks have ranged abilities or faster movement speeds. We'll see what Crispy does....

AC: 16

Wild Shape: 1 (2 max)

Conditions: water breathing
"Curse the fool, I can't do much to help at this range. I'm going for a swim if anyone wants to join me" Sjon says to the party in earshot, "and we pray that the creature in the bay has retreated for good."
Sjon will hop onto the rail and dive into the water. He will use his full movement (30') and a dash action to swim underwater towards the dock. Swimming is 1/2 speed, yes? If so, then Sjon should end his turn 70' from the dock.

Sjon is actually 270 feet from the launch, as the boat is 300 ft out
The sniper will take another shot at Crispy, as his longbow is still in range, though at DISADVANTAGE to the roll
he misses and the arrow sails wide of Crispy
Bahar roars to the mob, "Fools! They try to draw us into the water. Hunker down and knuckle up."
Bahar and his crew take up defensive positions behind the crates on the dock. They all ready actions with their guns if anyone comes into range.
Hawkes and Renda work on reloading the ballistae. each takes 3 rds to reload, so working together you can get 2/3 on a single ballista or 1/3 on both
Sam starts searching the capt's quarters

Well shucks, for some reason I had 100' in my head. Waste of a couple turns I guess.
Sjon will pop his head above water, realizing his miscalculation, and about face to return to the ship using movement plus dash.

"It would be suicide to attack, now that we've lost our element of surprise and they've taken defensive positions. My vote is we take our prize and leave for now. Weve gotten what we wanted. If we are convinced they must die we can circle back, lie in wait, or give ourselves a quarry to hunt in the future."
"On the other hand, the seas are small. We tracked them down. It would be foolish to think the favor will not be repaid."
