"So, matey's, do we seek fortune? I am wondering what happened to the loot Rogan lost and whether his death lifts the curse. I think we could benefit from a little research on Dwarven Curses and the ancient Dwarven city. 'twas why I was hoping to barter for the life of the dwarven Lass."

"Research on the ancient Dwarven city, huh? Yeah. That sounds alright. Maybe we can even kill two birds with one stone...no offense, Feathers."

"The seas and skies continue to speak to me. No words, mind you. More like...an itch. Nature seeks to share its power, and so I must need something treasured enough to focus that power. The Dwarves are known miners and merchants, and it just so happens that ol' Sjon Barker is in the market for some particular merchandise. Diamond dust, rare and expensive oils, and an exquisite focus. I don't know what I'll have after the plunder is split, but my list grows long and I'm guaranteed to be pursepoor for quite some time."

"All of that, along with the needed research, to help us find Gundren's fortune. I say we carry away after we've rested and provisioned our new ship. One that needs to be given a name if i'm not mistaken."

"Be careful what you say about renaming ships, my friend," Hawkes counters a little more sharply than intended. Then he recovers his humor.

"There is a protocol for that, else we make her unlucky. First ye find and remove every last vestage of the old name on the ship. Not just the Name on her stern. Nay, the logues and documents also. The old name must be stricken with prejudice. And do not so much as utter, guess at, or doodle her new name until it is done. When its all done and checked thrice, then we choose a name and Christen her.

Hawkes is surely decedent, but he is superstitiously Catholic.

"Rest assured, Sjon, if it is beneficial to our exploits, you shall have what finances are disposable to the equipping of the ship. You are the quartermaster now. If the ship needs diamond dust and oils, then make an accounting."

Ok, let me see if I can narrow down your choices with some information.  I DO want this to be a sandbox-style adventure, but I think I need to give some background.

Currently, the Eye rests in Wyvern Bay on one of hundreds of smaller islands in the Archipelago, shown in red.

    Next target Seawor10

To the north lies the Elven Ikkinid Empire.  They have built a massive wall to keep out the neighboring human horse-tribes.   The Imperial culture is full of art, music, architecture, technology and magic.  The horse-tribes are nomads with a keen mind for mounted warfare.

Due East are the human tribes of the Azteca.  They are primitive but have built impressive cities for trade.

South of the Azteca is the Dwarven Salaharda Caliphate.  Their capital city of Bhornalduhr sits in the fertile delta of the mighty Ganyar river.  The Caliphate welcomes trade but rules with a religious zealotry that includes the holy Gassaric assassins.

Across the sea, to the SW, are the orkish raider tribes of the Nhorolo, likely Rogan's people.

North of them on the Western Continent are the dwarven mountain tribes of the Dhern Faruhm Mountains.  They are wild and savage folk pinned between orks and Vocheoria, the insectoid races of the far north.

In general, the Eastern continent is built on trade and boasts higher tech civilizations.  The Western continent is more tribal and primitive by nature.

You could have many adventures just within the Archipelago, should you choose to stay there.  That is the main area of pirates and merchants passing between the Ikkinid Empire and the Salaharda Caliphate.

That is a very good question, Mike. We might have been close to a particular purpose sailing with Gundren. Rogan interrupted that plan, but with him out of the picture, we are free to pursue it.

    As for this:

Hawkes can loot, and whore, and drink, and cuss, but he worries that God will get mad at him for talking about such things in a church or within earshot of a nun. He chafes at the company of paladins and all but the most tolerant of clergy. Some day he plans to get right with God, but he has to quit sinning first, (which is theologically backwards as biblically speaking he cannot quit sinning without God). Hawkes is an equal opportunity believer in superstition, (and is privately freaked out that Renda could turn out to be right about clan and food). He will as soon consult a witchdoctor as he will a priest, but the priest will have advantage until the next time whatever thing Hawkes is trying to quit doing wrong becomes overwhelming.

"Right oh mate..." (regarding the Catholic comment).

As for naming the ship... there's being superstitious and reality. If we're getting all piratee here, they generally named a vessel for a particular person or often, a cause.

Queen Anne's Revenge (Black Beard's ship) - named for Queen Anne, a Stuart monarch of England and many of the famous pirates of the Caribbean were anti- Hanoverian (King George I) and so forth. They were often political or just personal when it came to names. The superstitious stuff is a lot of bollocks. They were superstitious about a lot, but ship names were pretty far down the list....

That was Alan role-playing his character, doing some world-building in this fantasy genre campaign. I did not find it to be waste of my time, in fact, I enjoyed it and felt it added flavor to the game. Thank you Alan for your creative contributions - please keep them up.

Renda turns to Sjon, noting his concern. He pats his big friend on the shoulder, reassuringly.

"Kraken serve Elys-yss. Keep Eiys-yss fed, all be happy. Worked for first Clan, will work for second Clan. Trust and see."

He beams with pride as if he has just explained a very deep truth.

the party is dividing up the loot in character, awesome roleplaying!

sounds like you set sail for the Dwarven Salaharda Caliphate and the capital city of Bhornalduhr to look for clues to the ancient city of Frostheim and the lost orkish fleet

party gets a long rest over night, bonds with items, focuses on items etc

I will get a new chapter up and going shortly

Thanks for your patience, everyone.  All caught up here until the NEXT TARGET is decided.

Josef909 wrote:The crew finds themselves back to their ship.  Having divided their loot, a meal is served in the mess.  The bounty of Amona Anha sustains them, along with any other provisions they wish to prepare for their victory feast.  During the meal and between flagons of ale, Sjon opens the book he claimed.  When it was discovered he explained that it was written in Druidic, an ancient language nearly lost to the world.  He turns the pages slowly at first, having to spend time to reacquaint himself with the forgotten symbols.  As the feast continues, he begins to feverishly flip back and forth from beginning to end as if searching for the conclusion of a story being told.  He waits for a moment where he can excuse himself without notice, and disappears from the merriment.

What of the rest of yas?  I will post a new thread once the crew has decided its next move.

whit10 wrote:Sam is juggling gemstones and watching Sjon read.... "any good bawdy tales in there, mate?"

Sjon barely takes notice of Sam as he continues reading until he reaches a point of conclusion.  "I have always heard stories of Neifion, a famed Archfey, who is known to have the powers of an oracle.  His location, nay, his very existence has gone unknown for eons.  Whispers of memories long forgotten.  This book seems to contain a specific investigation into his whereabouts.  It strikes me that if Neifion is still as capable as the legends say, he could point us towards the location of Frostheim.  I need time to decipher the rest of these writings, but it seems to point us towards the mountains south of Caloreska's eastern coast.   I need time.  Excuse me"

Chris wrote:Kruhl savors the long-dreamed of moment: freedom.

Kruhl tastes each item with enthusiasm.  Salted pork, pickled fish, sugar, bread, nuts... so many textures, flavors!

Having lived in near isolation for years, he his enamored with his new friends.  He raises many toasts to his liberators, the open sea, the island goddess, good food, good ale... too many toasts.

Kruhl has lost his sea legs and his stomach for ale.  The bobbing of the ship and the booze takes its toll.  His insides flip upside down and flail about like a tortoise in the sun.  He starts sweating uncomfortably.  His head spirals into anti-social paranoia.  "The captain doesn't like me, he thinks me a murderer.  The 2 elves are clearly spies of Ikkinid, clever to use a half-breed to dissuade suspicions.  The reptilians will eat me in my sleep, they have a predatory look in their slanted eyes..."

Happy commraderie twists their smiles into leering mockery.  Kruhl's heart beats faster as his booze-soaked mind betrays logic.  Did the Ikkinids send this crew to rescue him?  False hope, a taste of escape... it would crush the spirit to learn it was a betrayal.  Is the captain going for his blade?!?

Kruhl quickly stands and makes a feeble excuse, " I... need some air."  He stumbles up to deck.  The cold night helps calm his anxiety.  He stares out across the sea.  It is peaceful at first.  His eyes search for a reference point, but there is no horizon in the dark, no land to settle his vision.  Bile mixed with ale rises to his mouth.  His stomach protests the bloated feeling until he purges over the side.

He flops to the deck, exhausted.  He tries to enjoy his first view of the stars, but they pinwheel above him.  Closing his eyes is worse, the spins take hold again.  He tries to stand and make for the railing, but manages only to find his knees before his guts punch again, an uppercut from the inside.

Kruhl passes out on the cold wooden planks, drenched in sweat and vomit.

Everything goes black for Kruhl as he passes out, which is a reprieve from his previous state. He will sleep soundly until the sun rises unless one of the crew or a random sea bird disturb him.

See this link for travel times/speeds under sail. We should be able to get to most locations in 2-5 days. Additional research suggests that 120 miles in a day is a realistic average under sail.

"Port Claw" is where we started and is labeled in "red" as "hostile".
"Amon Anha" is where we are and is labeled in "green" as  "friendly".
"Ikkinid Empire" is shaded in red as "hostile"
"Sultanate" is shaded in red as "hostile".
"Azteca" is shaded in yellow as "caution" because we are pirates/outlaws.

The crew's path so far is notated with a blue path.

Kruhl slowly returns to consciousness, his head throbbing. He tries to remember the last beating. It must have been Sal, he always focused the head, whereas Firetail preferred small tender extremeties.

A strange noise filled Kruhl's ears. Sal must have boxed them for it sounded like static waves. Kruhl dug a finger into the canal to try and clear the dried blood, but found none. His face felt a warm, soft texture underneath his cheek. The stone floor must be blood-soaked, he presumed. A sharp needle of light pierced his eyelids... wait.... what? The darkness had grown comforting over the years.

Kruhl saw a ship railing, rigging ropes, sails fluttering. Ocean waves played a rhythmic melody from below. Kruhl decided he must still be dreaming. He hadn't dreamed of the open sea in a long time, the memories had faded. He searched the deck for the familiar faces of his former crew. Instead he saw the unfamiliar... this wasn't the Avenger, these weren't his men.

The half-breed that freed him, the island goddess, the firbolgs and kobolds, the victory feast... it all came flooding back to form a single thought: he was free!

Kruhl jumped to his feet, unaware of the dried vomit covering his clothes. He inhaled the salty air with a gaping grin. He ran to the side of the ship and felt the spray of the wake on his face. He ran the sea water through his grimy hair. He laughed out loud, in spite of his hangover.

Kruhl dashed from station to station on the ship. He re-tied lines, adjusted pins, trimmed sails and anything else he could find, whether it needed done or not. He was just happy to be sailing. His hands remembered their old strength from a lifetime of repeated motions.

Kruhl greets anyone else he sees with an overboard enthusiasm, "Best of mornings, mate! Fine ship you have here, fine lady indeed. Top knots! Tight sails. Amona be praised! Elyss-yss bless our winds."

Kruhl is unconcerned with course or heading. He is simply content to back on the sea; to be home.

    To Kruhl

Tyr (pronounced like the English word “tier”]) is a Norse war god, but also the god who, more than any other, presides over matters of law and justice.

“Mr. Polaris,” Hawkes approaches. Perhaps he overheard, but he’ll never tell if he didn’t. “Nice of you to join us. Main brace is two pints in the evening. No more. Safety first after all.” Let the villain know that someone still believes in Grace. Hawkes begins to walk away but pauses with his back turned. We appear to have an errand that will delay your passage. You may contribute on a need to know basis but you are a passenger. Let me know when you’re decided on your destination. Sam, with me.”

Kruhl nods to Hawkes, "As you wish, any neutral port will do fine. I don't want to burden your crew any longer than necessary."

Kruhl has no intention of complying, of course. He continues to find a sailor's work to do in odd jobs about the ship. He is content even with the lowliest of tasks such as scrapping barnacles or swabbing the deck. Just being outside and able to do something is infinitely better than the endless boredom of solitary confinement.

Renda goes about his duties with typical, quiet efficiency. He keeps a subtle watch on the two new crew members. Despite Hawke's apparent acceptance, He has not decided if he likes their smell or not...if they can be trusted not to try to eat him and his clan...so keeps his distance from them both. He wears his new cloak with pride and bonds with it while warming himself in the sun during a shift break.

Like most of his kind, Renda is "true neutral" alignment...more animal than man, driven by instinct and need rather than thought, so in most things, he is comfortable deferring to the clan Chief (or Captain, in the realms of man*). On matters of finishing off a kill or honoring the gods, Renda typically defaults to his lizard brain and does what feels most true.

    * = realms of man includes Elves, Dwarves, etc.

Hawkes clearly doesn’t trust the pirate hunter with whatever he wants to discuss. This will take some getting used to. “We need to plot a course.” Hawkes walks to the aft quarters. Privately he will apologize to Sam for trying not to look soft in front of a rival Captain. “I have come by my prejudices honestly, but I will try to give him a chance. I am having difficulty deciding whether he is Clan or Food...”

“Sjon gave us a region. Where do you suppose Sal and Firetail got that book? If Kruhl knows what we are going after, I don’t want him getting away with information. If I ask Renda to watch him you know what will happen. We need a level head and a keen eye. The only thing worse than a pirate is a pirate hunter/pirate. If he plays nicely, then he will have a share. If he turns onus, then he is not Clan.”

Kruhl will spend some time feeling out the warhammer and breastplate. (Bonding with breastplate afterwards). Kruhl fancied a rapier in his youth, which was spectacular against pirates but he learned to prefer the longsword against the many aberrations of the deep.

Kruhl first tries to mimic his sword+shield style, but with the weight difference and several years absent meaningful practice, it just felt clumsy. He next tried a modified "Postino del Falconne", holding the hammer high overhead, but with his lack of stamina that felt too tiring to be used effectively.

Weary now, he set up again, just holding the hammer low to the ground by his rear leg. He lunged with his shield, then found momentum to carry the hammer into an uppercut, then a downward blow, followed by a low strike at the knees. This seemed to flow for him and catered to his current physical state.

Satisfied with his daily training, he sat near the lizardman. Kruhl knew better than to disturb a sunbathing komodo. Whenever Renda stirs, Kruhl will speak to him, " River-walker, we sail west and south? These are orc raider waters and hunting grounds of One-Eyed Rogan. I chased Rogan once... just once. His beast Bahar gave me this to remember my failure." Kruhl points to a deep scar across his face.

Kruhl wanders the deck looking at the crew through fresh eyes.  He weighs this new information silently, as if plotting his course on a map, "So... Captain Hawkes is as bloodthirsty as me....  he feigns righteousness, but when given the chance, murders his adversaries without hesitation.... this crew is entangled with Ely-syss as much as I am.... we must not have been joined by chance, the Gods must have designed this.... but which one?  Ely-syss?  Nemesis?  another?..... and for what purpose.... interesting....."

As Kruhl paces deep in thought, he comes to a sudden realization... he is standing aboard Rogan's ship, the Eye of Gruumsh.  "Not only did they murder Rogan, they stole his ship!"   He shutters at which Gods might be offended by this.

“Boys, let’s call the hands to a vote! The ship needs a name. Offer yer suggestions publicly and argue your case before the crew!”

Kruhl shows his newfound respect for the Blood Hawke and sits outside the gathering, as the passenger he is.
