Jack Stone - Agent at large

Post  MAS on Thu Oct 25, 2012 12:42 pm

Jack Stone was an agent for the Union during the War. He got up into all sorts of mischief in the Western theater. Missouri, Arkansas, Kansas.....the places where the war was dark and ugly. Guerrilla raids, shifting loyalties, and knives in the dark. Damn good at what he did, with the scars and enemies to prove it.

Then, things started gettin' weird. Monsters and witchcraft and such. Things so dark it made the war look like a bright summer day.

Now Jacks in another war. Still workin' for the good Ol' US of A, best as he can tell. Gets himself to where things need fixin....and then does the fixin.

Build Concept: "Secret Agent, Wild West Style"

I had "James Bond" pretty heavily in mind for this concept. Thinking about what makes 007 so effective, I decided that while he was very skilled at fighting, his greatest strength is his adaptability. As a quick thinking "generalist", Bond is above average at just about everything. Socially, he is adept at dealing with a broad variety of personalities and social strata. Physically, he maintains enough fitness to be able to have a decent shot at succeeding under adverse conditions. In combat, he fights well enough to deal with lackeys and hirelings, can usually outwit a unique henchman's advantages, and with a dash of luck and creativity, can also take out most "bosses".

So, for this build, I focused on improving chances of general success without favoring a specific capability. All saves, and most skills receive a boost.

Next level, it will "multi-class" with "Mage-blade" to improve combat and stealth.

just a thought about multiclassing.... you have to spend the 1d4 years (or howmanyever years) when you multiclass into the new class. Maybe you should start 2-1 and pick up the other Pathfinder stuff at 4?

Badass. I'd say you hit your concept nicely... It would be interesting to see how he would change with a level in MageBlade... But I like him as a straight Pathfinder too.

What about background? What does he want? Where is he from? Why is he in the west?

@Rob - I will be writing a little background story that answers all those questions about his motivations and such. I have a busy weekend, but should have a final build and background story done next week.

Refer to the new class’s usual training
time and spend that amount in weeks (rather than years), with each
week costing 50 gp in materials and tutoring, assuming you locate a
person of the new class to train you. Reduce the cost to 25 gp weekly
if you train under a fellow party member or a sentient nonperson
(such as a dryad, illithrix or werewolf) that is friendly to you and has
the class listed among its multiclass options.[i][u]

    Awesome!

Maybe 'Ol Buford (the GM) will see fit to make sure there is a time gap in the story big enough to allow for my multi-class change after we level up.......?

I would really like to have "Jack" built on these 3 levels of Pathfinder before I change theme and add a class...

Or maybe I would/could play another character while he "changes over".....

    I like the mage-blade variant at 3rd.

If you wait to multiclass until 4th, you miss your first Intermediate ability, to me the basic abilities just aren't worth missing a 2nd tier ability. And MB gives you a nice combat boost now Wink

But don't feel like you have to, I'm not opposed to more than one character per player. There are familiars and hirelings too...

In gaming, character "training" is a space that often gets overlooked or glossed over. Like, how does the fighter all-of-a-sudden learn a new feat???

    Reviewing...

    What is Jack Stone's alignment?

Have you decided if you're going 3rd level pathfinder or mageblade?
...seems like he'd get more skill bumps with pf, but m/b would lend more for combat.

I enjoy how Jack Stone has developed. His background enticing, yet open enough to be flexible within the campaign.

Also, everyone was given +3 in enchanted items to begin play with... The bonus can be spread out amongst a few items, or used as DR, but the total magical enhancements equals 3. That stacks with Arcane strike or whatever else.

Finally, everyone got something special: Tommy received a warhorse, Auren received a title (marshal), JP got a mysterious time-jumping tattoo.
What would Jack like? A warhorse is handy (Auren's got one too, but he is a paladin, after all). Following with the James Bond theme, perhaps a laser watch? tongue

Thanks! That is the abbreviated version of the prologue I intended to write in detail, glad to know it does the trick.

I'll take DR 3.......is this ability tied to an item? If so, we'll say its a belt buckle!

    LOL! laser watch!

As a special item - How about some magic glasses? A certain amount of charges per day; Each charge can grant dark vision for X rounds, or add +X to an appraise, perception, bluff, insight, literacy, or diplomacy roll.

Yes you did pay for the title, and that's cool. You also got a couple deputies and a really nice office/jail/apt for the cost of an apt. Not trying to nickle and dime anyone.

BTW, you paid for your horse? And here I thought you would be all paladin-y and summon it old school style tongue

And I got 2 DEAD deputies, actually 4 dead deputies now Sad

Hey Matt, since you're not interested in playing Weird West, do you mind if I use Jack Stone as an NPC? I have a notion that he's serving Pestilence as full-time deputy. He sees it as a challange, because the other deputies had, um, early retirement.

    Feel Free!

If I can make time to join the WW, I'd be making a new character, so he is all yours.
