Pt. 3: "Showdown at Biggs Ranch"

The adventurers continue down the road and there is no sign of the coyotes.

After a time, they begin to see buildings in the distance, surrounded by fencing. Biggs Ranch is near.

The entrance to the private drive is two large wooden doors. All along the perimeter of the ranch is a barbed wire fence 16' high. Two men stand guard at the gate. Another man on a horse is near to them. Down the private road, by a stable, are two more horsed men.

Just level up. You guys can rest if you want to, or need healing.

A character can switch themes once in their career. You keep the awards you already have, but all new awards come from your new theme. So in that respect, it's NOT like multiclassing.

One quick question... one of the intermediate powers for gunslinger is improved gun focus or something like that. Anyway, it gives a +2 to hit and +5 to damage with all guns and I take this to mean that it replaces the +1 and +2 that they start with instead of 'stacking' with those original bonuses. Am I right about that?

Looks like you took Firearms Specializations and Defensive Maneuver Training. DMT is good against the tripping coyotes.

Remember also, you can activate the zap gun on a 51% or more. After that it's 1 in 6 malfunction. At least, until Tommy gains the Technics skill. He just needs to find someone who can teach it.

A dry wind blows over the desert plain, as the heroes make a long dramatic pause.

***It's great to have the Star Wars game start-up discussion going on in the other thread. I was wondering if we are putting this game on hold? Because the 2 day posting rule is still in effect. No pressure, just wondering. I can make the first move, just thought you guys wanted to discuss things. Everyone should be leveled up too.

right, I was just thinking about our cowpokes!

should Auren level up too? I hadn't yet, assuming they were just catching up, but then you said

The Marshall nods in agreement with Tommy and JP, "I think we are heavily out numbered here, let's consider some unorthodox options....." Auren's eyes linger over JP's dynamite "although I wonder if we should be just asking questions first and not assume they are all oily monsters. After all, Lou here appears unaffected."

    From the previous thread:
    Robyo wrote:XP:

    Blue: 5
    Tommy: 20
    JP: 25
    Auren: 30

Everyone should have enough XP to level up.

Do you guys care that much about tracking XP, or should I just tell you to level up when appropriate? I don't really care either way, but one is more bookwork than the other.

I haven't even really looked at XP in Radiance. I am fine with just being told "DING! you gain a level" whenever you feel it's approriate.

I usually wait until the end of a chapter\section whatever, like we just did here, starting the "showdown" segment.

The point of XP is to reward role-playing, killing monsters, grabbing loot, and doing creative stuff with your characters.

"I ain't afraid to tell you fellas," Lou begins, "there's been a whole lot weighing on my mind lately. Why, just yesterday I discovered my buddies were monsters. I don't know who to trust anymore. All that matters is that I locate and rescue sweet Lena from the ranch. She's my little sister and she works in the Bossman's manor. I helped get her a job here last spring. I've got to find her and then the two of us will be getting the heck out of Dodge. I reckon you fellas will start shooting up the place soon. I've got to rescue her first."

Lou goes on to explain that the buildings near the gate are:
    U-5: Stable
    K-12: Office/Guesthouse
    V-14: Watering Hole

Further down the private road, out of sight, is the manor.

"I can go to the gate by myself and see what happens. That might buy some time for JP to do his sneaky-sneaky. Once I'm inside, I can find out if there's any more monsters about. I can signal you guys with three quick gunshots. You guys can fight the Bossman if you want, but my priority is rescuing Lena."

The Marshall pats Lou on the shoulder, "thanks for being truthful with us Lou, I know this is all very strange. I do worry about sending you in alone, after all, that squid-face captured you right quick last time, and then you and Lena are both in a pickle."

"I say we let JP sneak around and the rest of us go to the gate together. Our priority has now changed. Rescuing Lena is our first duty here. Let's head straight to the manor house and see what happens along the way. Hopefully JP can make a nice big distraction for us and then rejoin us on the inside."

Is there just a fenced compound or is there grazing land fenced in too? If its just the buildings jp will sneak the perimeter looking for a spot away from both the front and from the big house. He will set his diversion there. Then he will find a position opposite where he can snipe the entrances of the big house if shooting starts. "Ah weel start zeh troubell ovehr zehr, and haide ovehr zehr", pointing to spots his player cant see on the map. (Dms discression as to where those places are he is looking for). I will wait to describe the diversion till i know how this plan sits with the dm. Basketball

There is a 16' barbed wire fence going all around the perimeter of the ranch.

Could you be more specific, perhaps using locations on the map?
By "big house" do you mean the guest house/office that is near the main gate (K-12)?

If JP cuts through the fence (a thievery action, since he is trying not to be detected- make a Stealth check), from where he's presently located on the map, he can sneak down to the pile of boulders at H-3. That would get him in position between the guest house and the stable.
It would however, also put him closer to the other mounted cowboys...

Not trying to tell you what to do with your character, just want to understand the plan and make suggestions.

If the others are prepared to go to the gate and talk, we'll proceed...

In that case jp will simply hide 17+9=26 while the others go to talk (to obfuscate our numbers). While hidden he will take aim at one of the gun-hands on horseback and sit tight. bom

What is the counter at a-1 for? Is there another clump of rocks over in that corner or just off the edge? (Not to complain but youve already got us awfully close to be sneaking around).

The counter is there simply to mark direction, but it's kind of out-of-focus, sorry for that. You guys have been heading south...

There's no big rocks to hide behind by the road. JP can lie Prone though, which gives him +2 to defenses. Maybe JP can just wait behind, being sneaky, while the others go up and talk to the guards. Then maybe he can cut his way inside the fence?

The heroes approach the gate and there are two guards standing there. One is a human and the other appears to be a half-orc. They are well-armed and looking grim.

"Halt, who goes there?" says the half-orc, raising his shotgun.

"G'day, marshal," replies the half-orc, lowering his gun and gathering a friendlier tone. " I didn't recognize ya. My names Grog, and this is Sam. Is Mr. Biggs expecting you? I haven't seen him around today. And no one told me we were having visitors." He glares at his partner, who simply shrugs. Then they begin opening the gate, which is a process of unlocking, unbolting, and swinging open the massive wooden slabs. The wood to construct them must have been sourced miles away high in the mountains, where wood is plentiful. The doors are an obvious sign of status. Surprisingly, the woood of which they are constructed, is not dried-out or withered-looking, which is unusual considering the climate. When the path is clear, Grog adds, "You fellas come on in and make yourselves at home. Stop in at the Watering Hole and have a drink on the house. I'll send Berny to fetch Mr. Biggs for ya." He waves for the other fellow on the horse to come nearer.

"Have you seen Lena today?" Lou asks of the guards.

Sam smiles, answering, "She's got the day off. Went out riding with Fran earlier this morning. I reckon they'll be back by lunch time."

as C3PO would say, "He seems very friendly"

Marshall replies, "Thanks Grog, we'll wait at the watering hole for Mr. Biggs."

When we are past the guards, Auren asks Lou, "Does Lena usually ride with Fran?"

Here is another map, with a wider view, showing the 3 buildings:

[img][Only admins are allowed to see this link][/img]

    Guest House/Office: K-12
    Stable: U-5
    Watering Hole Lodge: V-16

JP is at B-1, and doesn't have line of sight on the entrance of the Watering Hole (it's behind the guest house), and it's also out of range of his carbine. Plus, JP is looking through a barb wire fence, which obscures his vision slightly.

"I suppose so," replies Lou. "Fran is a server at the lodge. Her and Lena hang out sometimes."

Auren and Tommy continue riding down the private road, and Lou is on foot. As you pass the other horsed cowboys, they tip their hats.

There is a hitching post outside the lodge, near the entrance (not shown).

Inside, there are a half-dozen cowpokes sitting around, drinking, smoking, and playing cards. There is a bartender and a couple serving girls too.

The bartender looks up. He wipes the counter with a rag, and asks,"What'll ya boys have?"

While the barkeep is busy fetching whiskey, Auren nods towards the 'boys playing cards and say quietly to Tommy, "Why don't you go sit in on a hand? See if you can learn any gossip."

When the barkeep returns, Auren will strike up some small talk with him, "Say, I heard in town that Bossman Biggs has a flying balloon. Where'd he find something like that around here?"

The game is Texas Hold'em. Appears to be about $100 in the pot.
