The FORCE - LightDark side rules

Post  Chris on Fri Apr 19, 2013 11:10 am

I am making this its own section since I can see some future debate rising up around it.

    just for background -

Lucas has made it VERY clear that his vision of the Force, as seen in the movies, is as follows:

    The Force = Light Side
Dark side = corruption of the Force

thus you see the seduction\addiction\withered looks, etc

However, it has been presented differently in the Expanded Universe. ie books, video games, etc

I really prefer the EU explanation, as it fits into my world-view better in general.

The Force is energy, not specifically light or dark. Obi Wan described it correctly (thank you Kasdan and Campbell) "It is an energy field, created by all living things. It surrounds us, penetrates us and binds the galaxy together." (nowhere does he say it is 'good')

The Force has two aspects, light and dark (and everywhere in between). Sentient beings exercise their free will to choose how they connect with and use the Force. This attunes them more towards one side or the other. It is Yin and Yang.

Light = calm, light, warm, good, nurturing, etc
Dark = volatile, dark, cold, evil, destructive, etc

If you read the rule book, it leans more towards the EU description, which is good, but it is still too influenced by Lucas for me.

I am going to take it a step further, as it was presented in the Old Republic video games.

There will be a sliding scale of Force Attunement. Each time you do something Dark, you will move 1 (or more) steps towards the Dark side of the scale. when you do something Light, you will move 1 (or more) steps towards the Light side.

What this means is that if you really do both Light and Dark actions, you will stay roughly in the middle of the slider, neither Light nor Dark, but neutral or "Grey" as it is called.

I think most real people live somewhere closer to the middle, leaning a bit one way or the other. Few people are really truly evil and few people are able to avoid 'human emotions' like jealousy, greed, anger.

Each side of the scale has certain 'markers' when you get far enough in that direction. For instance if you are ever +10 Dark, you are considered "Tainted". If you get to +10 Light, you are considered "Refined".

There are markers 1 to 5 on each side, ending with "Enlightened" and "Dark".

There are certain aspects of the game that interact with your Attunement. For instance certain Force Relics may require Light 2 or Dark 3 to be used. Or Force seals\doors that require a certain level of Attunement to be opened. etc etc

So staying "grey" is everyone's personal choice, but just know that it will affect some minor game mechanics.

I will try to only give LS\DS pts for CHOICES that you make. Again it goes back to free will and the choice to ACT a certain way. No LS\DS points for thinking about something.

To me, the problem with just giving DS points for using DS Force skills would mean that any use of LS Force Skills should generate LS points, which is just silly imo.

You get the DS pt for CHOOSING to be cruel and inflict pain and suffering. To me that means something like Force Choke or Lightning the way Palpatine did it to Luke in RotJ. They were used as torture, to be cruel and to punish.

I don't see how an 'in combat' use of those skills is any different from Force Push, Telekinetically hurling machinery at people or cutting someone in half with a lightsaber while using the Force to gain strength, focus the mind and add damage. Self Defense is Self Defense, which is every sentient being's right.

Likewise, if you are cruel or torture someone by mundane means, you will still get DS points.

This will mostly be visible during dialogue and decision making. I will incorporate it into the main stories and also have small 'encounters' that specifically give you opportunities to make choices.

This is a separate mechanic from Force Points, which will be explained below. The only correlation is that your level of Attunement affects how many 'bonus dice' you throw when using a Force Point. The higher your Attunement, the more dice you throw.

    FORCE POINTS:

these work like Action points in other systems. In SW it says they just add bonus dice, but I am opening the concept up to include uses like we see in PF and Radiance - Feat use, reroll, etc etc.

Otherwise the rules are basically the same - you get 1 Force pt per level and anytime you do something heroic at a dramatic climax moment. Note there are 2 requirements there - heroic and at a dramatic moment.

So for instance, Luke slaying the Rancor was heroic but not at a climax moment. Escaping from Hoth in the Falcon was at a dramatic moment, but not specifically heroic.

Vader sacrificing himself to throw the Emporer over the railing = heroic and dramatic. Using the Force to fire a torpedo without computer targeting = heroic and dramatic.

If you don't have the Force Sensitive Feat, you can only hold 5 Force Points. With the Feat you can hold unlimited Force Points and gain access to Control\Sense\Alter. Just like it says in the book.
