"Ah yes, tall one. The chest." Gamble turns to one of his aides and nods for them to retrieve the chest. As they leave Gamble continues, "Quite a strange thing it is. Our best and brightest have yet to tell me anything useful about it, but it can't hurt to let you all inspect it as well."
After another serving of roasted meats, the aide returns with the chest and an entourage of soldiers.
The chest is made of knotted wood and banded in iron. It is approximately 18"l x 12"w x 12"h. Interlocking iron runes cover all four sides and the top. The runes are intricately crafted and depict fantastic sea creatures, ocean waves, storm clouds, some sort of fortress, and ocean going vessels without sails. There is no keyhole or apparent way to open the chest. There is a palpable energy that falls over the area when the chest is brought closer.

Sam can see that the runes are mechanical in nature and moveable. He assumes they can be rearranged into different patterns. There does not appear to be any keyhole.

I will see if I can handle all the mapping myself, but it is nice to know I can recruit some help. This is likely my most ambitious series of encounters as a GM. Thanks for your patience everyone. I'm ready to continue.
Crispy has his snack, Sam finds some rope to use, The party follows a discrete tunnel system towards the temple per Gamble’s instructions. Back outside, down an alley, and into a mostly dry underground viaduct. Small puddles of stagnant water spash underfoot unless you take care of where you step. The walls have a fairly low waterline above which moss is ever present. The tunnel varies anywhere from 10 to 25’ wide with a ceiling low enough to make it somewhat uncomfortable for anyone over 6’ tall and claustrophobic for everyone. It is pitch black, apart from the small flame provided by Crispy. Who all has visual abilities (i.e. darkvision etc)? Also, just to be sure, our default order is Sam on point with Hawkes, Crispy is a few yards back, Abagail trailing Crispy, and Kruhl at the rear?
