    The following is guarded information for many, common information for some. It is the ‘secret history’ of the past 40 years. While many ‘learned men’ scoff and dismiss what is happening due to their own personal bias or lack of interest; many more people are beginning to realize that the world that they once knew is gone.

    Timeline: all history, as far as anyone currently knows, is that of Earth until 1887. However, all myths, legends and stories of fantasy and metaphysics are now viewed under a different light given the last 50 years.

    1887: First documented manifestation of vampirism according to Dr. Wilhelm Helldorf, court physician for the Habsburg royal family. The case emanates from Romania: a vampire allegedly killed seven people before being hunted down, shot over 30 times, hanged, and stabbed (but was still quite alive) until fire was used to incinerate the body.

    1887: A great green light is seen for many miles surrounding the southern Ural Mountains in Russia. No explanation is ever found.

    1888: 5 documented cases of ‘lycanthropy’ in England, France, Canada and Russia; each case mimics almost perfectly the case of the Beast of Gevaudan (1764-67, France).

    1888: 37 documented cases of ‘miraculous’ healing at Lourdes Shrine in France (Sanctuary of Our Lady of Lourdes). Every case shows no signs of illness after drinking or bathing in the waters of the shrine. Dr. Emil De Beque writes full account for the government but it is never published. One case was that of a woman, Marie Roche, who had terminal cancer and was healed in only one day.

    1890: “Great Ghost Dance” begins in the western United States. While the ‘uprising’ is crushed brutally, several accounts of Indian warriors manifesting beast-like attributes are reported by soldiers involved in the fighting. In one case, Corporal Daniel Stevens is photographed after a battle showing un-mistakable signs of being attacked by a bear or lion. Stevens dies before he can give a full account of his injuries.

    1891: Gustav Mueller, a minor academic from Vienna, writes an account of a sorcerer that he encounters in Egypt while searching for lost tombs. Mueller’s account is fragmented when it arrives in Vienna in the hands of his servant Ludwig Probst. Probst is subsequently committed to an asylum when a court finds him insane. The fragments of Mueller’s journal are locked in a vault in the Schloss Klessheim in Salzburg, Austria.

    1898: Last documented case of supernatural phenomena in the 19th century: two man-eating lions kill dozens of workers and several hunters in Kenya along the Tsavo River while a railroad is being constructed. Several eye-witness accounts say that the beasts are human by day and beast by night. These accounts are disregarded by British officials, of course. One lion is eventually killed, the other one disappears. Examination by the British physicians and biologists at the scene are indeterminate as to the cause of the lions’ behavior.

    1904 – Egypt: Renowned occultist, and Golden Dawn member, Alistair Crowley and his wife Rose arrive in Egypt. Rose begins having visions of the ancient Egyptian gods. Crowley later writes that a new age has arrived and the he is to be the new prophet of this age. Crowley and his wife disappear two years later and are reported to be dead by a man, one Sebastian Turnow, who also claims to be Crowley’s protégé. Turnow is able to lay claim, under dubious legality, to Crowley’s fortune and title. He subsequently begins the Cult of Osiris; a mysterious cult of sorcery.

    1908: King Carlos of Portugal and his son, Luis Felipe, are murdered by assassins. Though the official account states that Manuel Buica fired the shots that killed the king and his son; Alfredo Costa is also implicated and one eye-witness, Queen Amelie of Orleans, is certain that she saw a blue flash from the crowd as the shots were being fired from a different direction. The Queen also stated that she saw blue light of some kind strike her husband. Her account is ignored and quietly hushed up.

    1914 – August: As the Great War begins in Europe; one investigator (Johann Keppler) working for the Habsburg Royal family continues his inquiry of the Black Hand and the murders of Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife. This investigator disappears as the war starts, some say he journeyed to Serbia and then to Romania. He has not been heard from since. Rumors persist that the Black Hand was actually associated with the Circle of Apophis.

    1916 – The Somme- France: German and British soldiers give multiple accounts of dead soldiers rising up and continuing to fight one another and the living during the summer offensive. All of these accounts are believed to be a form of ‘shell shock’ and are quietly ignored or swept under the rug.

    1916 – Russia: Grigori Rasputin is murdered, allegedly, by members of the Imperial family and army after his influence on the Tsarina is seen to be too powerful. Contrary to the official report, Rasputin’s body is never found.

    1917 – Jerusalem: For three days, the sun disappears as dark clouds ominously form around the Dome of the Rock (which is built upon the ancient temple of Solomon). Muslims, Jews and Christians pray all over the city. When the three days end, many people have been changed in appearance as well as form. Scientists christen these new creatures as ‘elves, orcs and dwarves’ (and other names). Other cases are also confirmed in the Near East and other regions of the Mediterranean and Central Asia. For the next 7 years, this process continues to happen eventually reaching the Americas and Europe. People mysteriously change into new forms without any causation. By 1924, laws are being passed in several countries that discriminate against ‘mutants’ or ‘beasts’: those that are classified as ‘elves and dwarves’ see the least discrimination, those that are more ‘monstrous’ looking fare far worse. The common name for these people, slanderous though it is, is the Afflicted.

    1917 – Russia: The Russian Revolution begins and quickly degenerates into civil war. It is one of the worst internal conflicts the world has ever seen. Several accounts of atrocities filter out to the rest of the world.


    1922 – Japan – Osaka: Over one-hundred deaths are attributed to an ‘Omi’ or Japanese Vampire. Oroku Shingi is credited with killing the beast but he goes missing shortly after.

    1927 – Present Day:
    The world is much the same as it would have been if not for the re-emergence of the supernatural. Britain and France rule much of the world. Germany is weak due to the Treaty of Versailles. Eastern Europe is in chaos; engaged in minor incidents of civil war and wars between the newly created small states. Africa is divided between European powers but her newly found magical energy has rendered this control far more difficult. The people of the United States are mostly isolationist and uninterested in any affairs beyond their own borders.

    Numerous groups of secret societies are rumored to exist. Over 10 million people have been affected by “the affliction”. They are largely marginalized and persecuted; but this is not always the case.

    Numerous scholars, adventurers and explorers are still trying to find out what happened to bring about what is being called the “age of chaos”.

    great job! I love the Shadowrun + World of Darkness combo vision

    it sounds like most people have witnessed or are at least aware of the "goblinization" - what about vulgar magic?
    given the presence of elves, gnomes, aasimar, et al that are magical races, is vulgar magic widespread or is it still met with shock, fear and awe?

    is "goblinization" limited to humans or are animals "goblinizing" into magical beasts as well?

    yes and yes on what people have witnessed and animals.  Although animals aren't affected in the same proportionate numbers (that anyone knows, anyway) and mythical creatures are rumored to have been sighted, though no photographs yet.

    taking this line from your Timeline:

    Is this an absolute start for Vampirism? (some pretty weak vampires if none are older than 40 yrs)

    Dhampirs, according to PF, live as long as elves, something I was planning on using in my backstory, to have been born somewhere between 175-250 years ago (no age penalties at that point) or around 1700.

    Let me know if that doesn't work for your story and\or what is the earliest he could have been born?

    The campaign history/timeline looks pretty sweet!

    My PC, Zaya, is a half-elf with drow blood. She spent her childhood in the underdark until freed by an order of paladins (see her background). I'm not sure how the underdark integrates with your ideas of the world or what part of the planet Zaya's paladin order exists in. I figured it would be Europe, but am flexible since Josh is continually updating his world.

    the concept of a "walk-about" is traditional in the aborigine culture. I could see the aborigines goblinizing into halflings

    It's not so much that as it is "how did you get any education or knowledge of western culture?" Aborigines were still treated like second-class citizens (if not worse) at this time. Hell, the Australian government only just recognized their rights to land in 1992.

    Just things to consider. Might make for a good story background.

    sure.... but that's assuming he wants any western education or knowledge of western culture. his Knowledge Skills could be in Nature, Geology, Planes (aborigne concept called the Dreaming), Arcana, etc.

    No shit Chris, that never occurred to me (facepalm). I'm well aware of that, but, since this will take place primarily in Africa, Europe (occasionally the Americas) and parts of Asia, that needs to be taken into account.

    I will state this to make sure it has been graphically noted.  You really should have some kind of combat abilities for any character.  I know that people like to create characters that have good backstories and what not... that's always good.  But make damned sure you can fight or something similar (magic, etc).  

    I'm very much writing this in the style of 1920s and 30s pulp fiction.  Lots of action but wits will be very important as well.  Social skills (Bluff, Diplomacy, etc.) will also help you avoid pointless combat or situations that might require NOT fighting.  I don't want every encounter to be a bloodbath (that could get messy for everyone, especially in a city) so those skills take on new importance IMO.

    Again, this is not meant to restrict anyone at all... just a friendly reminder for the campaign itself.  If you have not seen them, I recommend watching the 90s remake of the Mummy, the Maltese Falcon (a personal favorite), the Indy trilogy (obviously) and any of the Allan Quatermain (King Soloman's Mines), though it's a set a few decades earlier.  I'm sure I've missed some sources, but you guys should get the drift.

    Knowledge Geology would not make sense unless it's been taught to him. How many Aborigines do you think had an understanding of the science of Geology back then? Sure, they had Natural knowledge in spades... that's not even close to an understanding of Geology

    Somethings to think about for the world you're in:

    Languages are important, Latin or Greek for ancient studies, among others, (Hieratic for one), Modern languages for regular communication. Obviously spells can be used to help with this, but, I just wanted this out there for consideration. I won't try to hamper the PCs with this if I can help it but, in the backwaters of Egypt, you might want to have a way of speaking Arabic. Or if in China, at some point, Mandarin or Cantonese could be useful.

    Modern Magic: Remember, you are in a world that hasn't quite reconciled itself to magic as of yet. Non-humans and magic users (blatant ones anyway) are often hunted or persecuted by the locals (who do have guns or what have you) so there's an unwritten rule for most 'in the know' mages and non-humans to try and blend in as often as possible. This is by no means universally accepted, the Wild Hunt is notorious for using magic whenever they wish as is the Circle of Apophis (though, thankfully, their numbers are small). Modern police or constabulary forces have access to military hardware in most parts of the various empires as well as most of the modern states of Europe and the Americas, as well as the settled parts of Australia. They will and have responded to minor magical disturbances in the past, and they generally have one guy, at least, in the car that has a Thompson.

    Vehicles: for now, I going to try to keep them to more of a plot device unless someone wishes to have a car or motorcycle that's modified in some specific way. However, this also means that you're going to have to figure how to get it to another continent, deal with places with no roads (for cars anyway), etc. Just to be clear.

    If it becomes necessary for stats on a vehicle for combat purposes, they will be provided for certain.

    Ok, I need to hear from everyone that is going to play this in the next few days. If not, I'm scrapping it due to lack of interest

    What I need... character (doesn't have to be finished), where you envision yourself starting out (this will change when the first act begins), the group that you affiliate with (if any and this is not a requirement by any means) from the Groups page, plus any questions that you might have.

    My interest in running this is waning as time goes by... so, if we're going to do this, we need to do it soon. I have a lot of nasty cases coming up and I won't really feel like putting in the time if there's not enough interest. Plus, my spare time is probably going to be filled more often from now on.

    I've been ruminating on playing a witch, instead a drow. Being a voodoo master from Haiti, she's somewhat of a monster-hunter.

    Seems like the drow paladin is bit too fantastic for the vibe of Josh's campaign. I'll probably save Zaya as a back-up in the Champions of 1000 Worlds adventure, or something.

    Of course if Josh's interest is waning, then we'll do something else. In the meantime, I'll be working on this new character concept.

    I don't think a Drow Paladin is too fantastic at all.... up to you. In fact, I was starting to build an idea around that. But I don't want you to feel any pressure to play a character that you don't want to play. I'm fine with making adjustments

    I'm ready to go. Couple lil tweaks tonight, gonna switch out armor for magic bracers and update to real world languages.. Greek, Latin, English, Farsi maybe. My guy is kicking around Europe and the near east, chasing rumors. He's happy to start anywhere.. didn't you say plan on starting in Alexandria?

    As Matt as said repeatedly, there is plenty of interest in playing.    But when we go days or a week with no updates.... it shouldn't be surprising that it appears to have no interest.  There has been no start date announced and last I heard we were doing 1 more C1KW fight and then WoD.

    If that has changed, I must have missed it.

    Everyone except Matt has a character complete (some for weeks or months).   Set a start date and we will all be ready.  The lack of interest only seems to be from the GM, we have all been ready and waiting

    I'm more than happy to run this after one more Epic encounter/thing. My earlier post wasn't meant as an ultimatum or anything.

    Aha! I am return-ed!

    The idea for going Aborigine could go a few ways -

    Englishman/Aussie who has a "dances with wolves" experience and becomes immersed in the cosmology.

    Aborigine born, ends up working on a merchant ship, bounces all around the pacific, India, the ME, and Africa.

    Either way - if your angling towards a pulp feel, it should fit well.

    I would say not directly, but would work as a paid consultant (ie merc). JT had quite enough of the military in the Great War. He had it better than most, in his mind, b\c he got to be underground and away from the insanity on the surface. He got to operate largely on his own initiative and never ordered to charge a fortified line.

    JT has no particular fondness for dark things (like zombies), so he wouldn't seek those out. But he does like fighting, sneaking, blowing shit up.... and he does have experience fighting the undead, so he would go where he was allowed to continue that kind of work. The thought of regular mining just seems.... boring now. JT's eyes are open to a larger world.

    what are the laws and enforcement like in Alexandria regarding weapons?

    I am assuming that I am not walking around with a submachine gun on my back, but I would definitely carry the pistol, the tunnel sweeper, TNT, his melee wpns concealed under a desert robe if feasible

    would that be some kind of stealth check vs an opposed perception? not sure how that works in PF....
