Gentlemen, I deleted the first several posts so that this table would be at the top -

Rob - If you add more equipment to this thread, open the first post using the "edit" button and add it there; this will mean all of the information stays on the first posting and at the top of page.

    Cheers -

Are all weapons available for the campaign, regardless of the historical date listed?

Thanks, I was going to clean up this thread, now I don't have to as much.

When we began talking about running the system, I had suspicions that the firearms might not be crunchy enough for a wild western gunslingers campaign. It is a fantasy steampunk game after all, though it is based more on tech and grit, then typical d20 fantasy... More stuff is always fun and it seems we need more guns!

There's a lot of good equipment listed in the Sidewinder:Recoiled book, which I will be adding soon...

I would say sure, but maybe guns over 50 years old are twice the price?

Thinking we'll try using the damage codes and prices of the weapons listed in Sidewinder. They seem reasonably balanced compared to Radiance. Then we don't have to use any houserules.

    Found it in the Sidewinder:Recoiled rule-set =

"Shotguns tend to be powerful, but only at short range; reduce shotgun damage by 1 point for every range increment of the attack. However, due the spread of the pellet pattern with distance, shotguns require less accuracy to hit the target. Instead of a –2 penalty per range increment in distance, apply a cumulative penalty of –1 per range increment."

Yeah, I saw that and that is fine. -1 damage per range increment, -1 accuracy per range increment.

When shopping between Sidewinder and Radiance, if you see a price difference for the same item, just go with the price that is lowest. For example: Chainmail shirt in Radiance costs 100gp. In Sidewinder it costs $45. Go with $45.

Reminder: we are using the Sidewinder damage ratings with the diversity of firearms.

    from wikipedia:
Movies which showed the strengths of the Sharps rifle are the 1990 western Quigley Down Under where Tom Selleck's title character's Sharps rifle has a 34" barrel as opposed to a standard length barrel of 30" and Burt Lancaster's character, Bob Valdez, in the movie Valdez Is Coming.[6] As a result of Quigley Down Under a Sharps match is held annually every year in Forsyth, Montana known as the "Quigley Match". A 44-inch target is placed at 1,000 yards for each shooter, remniscent of a scene from the movie.[7] Theater Crafts Industry went so far as to say, "In Quigley Down Under, which we did in 1990, the Sharps rifle practically co-stars with Tom Selleck."[8] This statement was echoed by gunwriters including John Taffin in Guns and Lionel Atwill in Field & Stream.[6][9] Gun manufacturers such as Davide Pedersoli and Shiloh Rifle Manufacturing Company have credited these movies with an increase in demand for those rifles.[6]

The Sharp's Carbine is also seen in the 2010 film True Grit, used by Matt Damon's character LaBoeuf. During the course of the film, the carbine's accuracy becomes a source of debate between LaBoeuf and Jeff Bridges' character "Rooster" Cogburn; at the film's conclusion, the accuracy of the gun is validated.

Rob, is that chart you posted valid for our game as regards cost of weapons and range?

If so... any chance something can be done for one of my GS powers that's kinda useless now?

Personal Firearms: You gain 800 gp worth of firearms and ammunition. Also, select 1
    gun as a personal weapon.

That's enough money and ammo to supply the whole party... which is fine I suppose but not terribly useful in the end. Any suggestions?

buy Alan his Gatling gun and field cannon, so he will stop asking for them!

But I do agree with your point overall, GS loses an actual ability that other classes gain for more money than he needs. My character has tons of money left over, I ended up buying flavor items like better quality locks for my manacles, a guard dog for the jail, etc.

Rob - what about buying more magic items? Not even necessarily more +1s to wpns or armor, but utility magic items - I am thinking Boots of X, Cloak of Y, Ring of Z, something like that.....

well that's understandable, I would hate for physics to get in the way of a time traveling, planar rift shifting, magic filled adventure that features elves, orks and dragonpeople galloping around in the American Wild West. Yeah, a goliath carrying a Gatling gun just destroys my willing suspension of disbelief too

That depends... Nothing denoted as Masterwork, (as per RPG p.159). I guess you could have a rifle made with exotic wood or something.

Me- lets ask rob, jp. Rob, how should i handle fifi in light of all of this. If i have prices i can probably upgrade to a full size covered wagon and make fifi a gatling gun. Not going to often have occasion to use it, but anyhoo... pirat

Purchase price is listed above. One dollar = one gp, and if there's a difference between what's listed in Sidewinder and what's in Radiance (for same item), take the lower price Smile

    Covered wagon would be useful!

I take it the bullet proof vest refers to something relatively low tech / primative compated to modern vests... bom

Well, consider late 1800's for tech level of most mundane equipment. Electrotech exists, but on Aerth it is new and strange (and mostly only in the hands of a few advanced races: Slith, Gnomes, etc).

Alan, can we expect Jaque-Pierre will be ready to roll soon? It's a good point in the story to bring him in...

Awesome! Jacque-Pierre is a trapper/hunter right? Let us assume he has returned from several months in the mountains. He recently stopped in the town of Pestilence to trade some skins and resupply.

Presently, he is riding out of town in his covered wagon, intending to make his way south to visit his cousin Jules who lives in Chino. Off the beaten-path, the small, mostly French-and-Spanish-populated villa can be reached by taking the southern road from Pestilence.

    Looking good!

    Couple things...
~default speed for human is 30 feet (6 squares).
~Jacque can have magic items with total bonus of +3 (to attack/damage or DR).
~Also, did not see a hand cannon... perhaps that is where the +3 will go?

Speed is 25 due to bulletproof vest.
Canon is kinda underpowered so i wana save the name fifi for a better gun unless you can find a comparative option in sidewinder, but i didnt see one.
if no canon option can be found i will spred bonuses amoung the rifle, sotgun and longknife.

Is this some kind of special tiny cannon or gatling gun? Or are you just throwing physics out the window? (since it's fantasy I guess that doesn't really matter)

Ok josh. Its an actual real weapon usually mounted on the railing of ships in the17-1800's and often seen in pirate movies. pirat Idea Occasionally used by larger men by hand (probably only in the movies or while braced against something), it fires small grapeshot or flechette at close range against boarding parties. Bigger than a blunderbuss and smaller than a canon. Im going to look up what they call it in pathfinder.

This is about the closest they have in PF...

Culverin (Hand Bombard): The culverin, also known as a hand bombard, consists of a simple smoothbore tube, sealed at one end except for a small hole used to ignite a gunpowder charge. A wooden stock partially encases the barrel, allowing the wielder to hold it under his arm with relative ease when carrying it. Firing a culverin without support (such as a wall, a window, or a stand) imparts a –4 penalty on the attack rolls, and the wielder is knocked prone. A culverin uses 4 doses of black powder and grapeshot. Note that these statistics simulate only the original, hand-held culverins—their larger descendants are considered cannons and are dealt with in the section on siege weapons.

The weapon that you're referring to above that was on ships couldn't really be fired by a man without him being knocked on his ass. The recoil is friggin silly... but, again, it's fantasy. I don't care, you're the one using it... just stay away from me so I don't go deaf when you fire it Wink

Yeah. Thats the one i was going to give you. (I just read it). Not asking for a laser gun, just something that actually existed. You could as easily ask whether one would allow longswords or horses in their campaign. Shocked i just want to know whether the damage for the "hand cannon" in radiance could be out of ballance with the rest of the weaponry in the campaign. If that cant be adjusted then id rather just wait for something more in line with jp's style, like revolutionary war era rockets and such. Sort of a crazy-hairy/mad bomber whacko with big weird guns, powder kegs with cartoonishly long fuses, and bowlingball sized bombs. affraid

We're using the Radiance rules regarding armor qualities. Don't worry about the -5 to speed... and so long as Jacque is proficient in medium armor, he can use it without a -5 penalty to all d20 rolls. Medium armor does inflict -2 penalty on Dex rolls however.

You've been reading my notes! tongue

Hand canon does area damage, so that's a plus (for slaying swarm creatures?).

The Radiance weapon tables are (mostly) in line with what's on the D20 Modern SRD.

Also for the campaign, I am incorporating bits from the d20 book Northern Crown: New World Adventures. It has a more colonial-era and East-coast vibe, but includes some really cool items too. Muskets, Spanish conquistador armor, and snaphances. Unfortunately, I don't have the PDF to share.

Snaphance is basically a mortar with a rifle stock. But again, only 1d12 damage.
[Only admins are allowed to see this link]

Northen Crown also has some pretty good rules and listings of artillery weapons. Though, compared to the present time of the campaign, they may seem a bit dated. I would love to find a Civil War era d20 sourcebook somewhere, but haven't yet found anything.

BTW, whatever you guys do, please don't download the Northen Crown Gazeteer! It has a bunch of monsters based on American folklore. Stuff that I'd love to spring on your PCs! affraid
