Much of the following information is available to knowledgeable folk in the 1880's...
There are more races than just Humans on Aerth. The other more secretive native races include Halflings, Pygmys, Atlans, Asimar, and Goliaths.
~American Civil War lasted 1860 - 1875.
~1863: Out of desperation, the Confederacy entered into a pact with the Blood Masquerade, an ancient faction of necromantic vampires. Legions of undead began to appear on the battlefields.
~1864: In response to the Blood Masquerade's interference, an ancient order of knights, known as the Knights of Erynor, and enemies of the Blood Masquerade, began to assist the Union armies. The Araen Cavaliers are formed to fight the undead. Asimar and other native races fight alongside the Union soldiers.
~1865: Rifts begin to appear (caused by massive explosions), first in the Northern states, then later, in the South and then the rest of the world. There has been no official explanation of what caused them. Rumor is they were caused by mercenaries with futuristic technology, hired by the Blood Masquerade, but then they went rogue.
~1865: A rift-bomb obliterates most of New York City, leaving much of the surrounding landscape a meta-enhanced wasteland. Lincoln is assassinated at Ford's Theatre. Andrew Johnson becomes president.
~1866: Escalation of the Civil War and rift-bombs causes other countries to help the Union. The war drags on for 9 more years.
~1869: After Johnson's impeachment, Ichabod Andyn is elected president. He has remained in power for five terms and is rumored to be an Asimar.
~1872: A series of rift-bombs along California's San-Andreas Fault causes much of the territory to sink into the ocean. Huge swaths below ground become opened up to the Underdark regions of many planes, all spliced together into one giant subterranean network of twisting tunnels.
~1873: Texas, fed up with the war, succeeds from the Confederacy (and the US completely). The eradication of undead within the borders of the Lone Star Republic forces the Blood Masquerade further south into Mexico. The Union continues to pound the remaining southern states.
~1875: Lee surrenders to Grant and the Union is victorious. The southern states remain under indefinite marshal law, with status of little-more than occupied territories.
~1877: Cactus Valley reservation, a place to send outlanders, is created in Arizona territory. It is also known as the Wasteland, and many weird things occur there. The nearby town of Pestilance grows in prominence because of it's proximity to the strange reservation.
