The squire arrives in attempt to legitimize your poor sendoff.  He has brought the promised wagon with an old nag of a draft horse.

"Sorry, our best horses are wounded and we had to send riders for reinforcements."

Before he goes any further, Emilian wants to figure out the strange crystal shrinky gun he swiped from the first goblins..

After retrieving a goblet of wine from the recently adjourned meeting, he pulls the device carefully out of his bag, unwraps it, and lays it on the ground.

He squats down, and from his cap plucks a feather, with which he stirs the wine.. carefully making funny motions with his fingers (jazz hands) and mumbling strange, made-up sounding words..

"Abra-ca-hocus, mekka lekka hi, mekka hiney ho..."

All the while, hoping he looks and sounds sufficiently mysterious.

Then he gulps the wine in a single draught and pitches the goblet over his shoulder carelessly.

He picks up the device and studies it from different angles.

"Ehhh... Emilian sees now.. Most interesting..."

Emilian casts the 1st level Bard spell 'Identify', granting him a +10 on Spellcraft checks to ID magical items.

Spellcraft check to ID the properties and use of the crystal gadget: 1d20+10+6 (16+10+6)= 32

Does Emil learn what the device is and how to use it?

Ila hisses like a cat and tucks her tail as she darts behind a tree.  She is distrusting of non-spiritual powers.... or maybe she is just sharing her opinion of jazz-hands out of Fossey-context

Tuq softly hums Owl's blessing as he further inspects Korwin's hammer for the next 18 seconds (3 rds, for full reading):

"Bring on the night. There is nothing to fear in the darkness.
Hail the holy Owls, Shining of the harrow,
    Whole Ye hold the Hearth,
Mighty elders of old. Turn our minds toward you!"

Lol @ hating out-of-context jazz hands lol!

Emilian is actually somewhat suprised someone 'bought' his performance..

And feels sort of bad for scaring Ila!

He makes a mental note to offer her some pie later when Tuq isn't looking..

"Thank you Sire," Chef says giving an apple to the horse. "I understand if you can't risk any more men on this mission. However, do you have a map of the area we could borrow?"

Chef returns to the kitchen. he prepares jerky and lembas bread for the road.

Emil's assessment of the device is not so much that it is "magic", the crystal seems to emminate a raw primal energy.  Most closely related to transmutation.

The device seems to be an attempt to harness that energy in magical terms to its nearest applicable tangible permutation along an oddly unpredictable wavelength of variables.  He is pretty sure he can activate it consistently, but what it will do each time is a guessing game.

Tuq's examination of the crystal in Korwin's hammer is similar, but without an activation interface.  It appears to be co-incidental that this " pretty rock" is in the hammer.  Further time for observation, contemplation, and experimentation may yield a more tangible hypothesis...

I will try to develop a map, but the gorge is well known to hunters and travelers, at least south of Starfel.  The road to Aris-Tyne is usually within sight of it.

Lumneor is ready to go. If possible, he refilled his flasks of oil. He is also carrying the makeshift flame thrower on his back.

"The road will most likely be watched. I suggest that our stealthier companions scout ahead, perhaps along the countryside. I will be kicking up dirt, driving the wagon. Anyone is welcome to ride with. "
