King will quietly relay what he’s seen to the others. “Press on or seek cover? We know not if that is friend or foe.”

Hey guys, I'm sorry but I'm going to have to postpone any updates for a few days. I leaver for IL tomorrow morning for Christmas and I'm really busy today (as well as last night) with work that I need to finish up before I leave.
I will definitely get things updated when I get back. Sorry for the delay

Re: Revolution Calling
Hey guys, sorry for the delay (and I also got sick so that delayed things as well). Not Covid as far as I can tell.
So, this encounter is going to be a bit different. I can't find a map that would work properly here and you are travelling in boats down the river. So here is what we're going to do.
This is going to be a "running encounter." You can do one of three things during your turn: make an attack (ranged), move or use a Gambit or something similar. Assuming you stay in your boat, you are already considered to be moving (we'll stick to normal speeds). If you move (using oars of course), that's a double move and you get an additional +2 to AC for anyone trying to shoot at you. If you attack, all normal rules apply. Same thing for using a Gambit or what not.
You will be out of range in 3 turns, unless you stop on the right bank of the river (where the enemy is), or if you get killed of course.
Before we start, does this make sense and are there any questions?

Re: Revolution Calling
sorry, we talked about it on the phone. I just have a few questions, since we don't have a map...
how many enemies are we facing? (ie decide fight or flight)
are they all considered to be within normal range? or long range for pistols, normal for rifles or ??
you said we are out of range in 3 turns. does that mean we are out of range in 2 turns if we double move? or do we just get the +2 to AC? in which case, just taking the Dodge action for DIS would be a better choice

you think it's at least 3 enemies but you're not certain as they have cover.
normal range for rifles, long range for pistols and smoothbores
yes, you can be out of range in 2 rounds if everyone double moves.
I hope that answers your questions.... I'm still fighting this cold so my brain isn't working real great today

Coffin briefly considers just paddling for it since he has the stolen goods. It would lead the attackers away from King and JP. If he were planning the ambush, he would have more marksmen up ahead in the hope that the group divides itself. He decides its safer to stay together.
Coffin uses the Gambit Aid
All 3 party members gain +5 current and max HP.

Ok, the rest of the shots miss as they are at much longer range. The party is out of danger for the moment.

Yes, continue with as much speed as possible, essentially x2 moving each turn

Hey guys, I'm truly sorry to do this but I'm going to have to pause things for a few days. Dealing with some horrible mental health stuff right now. I'm about broken at this point and have to try to pull myself together (if that's even possible any longer)

I understand. Please don't feel badly about it. I have had to abandon multiple games myself due to IRL issues. (pf2e, tomb of annihilation, SW5e... probably more!)
I guess the first question is: do we just want to take a gaming break for a while or do you want to keep playing but just be a player (not a GM)?
Same question to Alan?
Same question to me - I am fine either way.
If everyone wants to keep playing, any thoughts or ideas for the next game?
Alan - do you have map making capabilities currently? would you want to GM, if I helped with the maps?
I will assume Mike and Matt are out, unless we hear otherwise.

Hey guys, I’m still interested in playing 5e though I’m fairly certain I won’t have the bandwidth to DM 5e or learn a new system as a player. I totally understand the complaints about it as a system and respect if y’all want to steer away from it, but it’s what I know at an instinctive level now and gives me the best opportunity to maximize the time I have to spend on gaming which is admittedly limited.
I also don’t think you should be catering to my preferences, so if the consensus is to try different systems by all means have at it and keep me in mind if you ever come back to 5e!

Excellent!
5e is fine with me especially with small add-on stuff like Nations and Cannons. Most of the issues are GM side or can be mitigated by just removing the broken "power creep" books and later content.

I think all I can do for now is play. Just not in the right place for GMing at the moment. Fine with whatever the group decision is

I always feel like I should DM but I know it won’t end well. I have 3 business trips and possibly another surgery for Gretchen on the radar over the next 7 weeks. Then pre trial mid March and a 3-week trial in April. I’m already exhausted just thinking about it.

Fair enough, but what about a plan to rotate to you as GM in say..... June?
I could run something for about 4 months, lets call it 1 chapter and that gives me an out by summer which is when I expect to be busier - hopefully selling mom's house, moving her somewhere, family road trip, etc
If that is agreeable, we could move the discussion to setting:
straight fantasy
western\pulp fiction\gothic fantasy - some guns but still low capacity (van helsing movie, league of extraordinary gentlemen, Mummy, etc)
apocalyptic fantasy - guns as relics of lost age, very rare ammo (Fallout, gamma world)
future fantasy - like SW (there are actual 5e rules for SW that we could borrow from with rules for "Tech casting" etc)
other
each of those would require progressively more add-on rules. I think N&C with very minor tweaks could handle western era guns
thoughts?

All that sounds pretty cool. Would love to see a a post-apocalyptic world with a magic “awakening” ala Shadowrun

I like the sound of that! I am getting Mad Max meets Shadowrun vibes thinking about it...
Would you be willing to do a quick write up for it? That would make the world-building more collaborative.
It might be cool to use actual Earth, like Shadowrun did.
What caused the apocalypse? ( ww3, meteor, AI terminators, etc)
How long after that is the story set? (20 years, 100 years, 500 years, etc)
How long ago did magic start to awaken?

Re: Revolution Calling
I’m game for anything. I can tentatively agree to take over in June. Lord willing I will be able to purchase the right equipment and software to make DM’ing more convenient.
I might run a module. I can probably buy one and begin reading it. I will choose that after we’ve gotten started So that it merges well with the setting and characters. (I can easily modify for post apocalyptic scenarios as anything can happen if the fit hits the shan). I will shoot several levels up so we can advance generously or level skip if necessary.

Re: Revolution Calling
I'm basically good with everything that was discussed above.
I'd prefer the first idea (old west/etc) but, despite my hate for dystopian worlds, post-apocalyptic stuff is fine too

There’s a case to be made for a post apocalyptic world that is less dystopian and more like a Wild West. But the shoutout to Shadow Run does pique my curiosity. I’ve had street Samurai on the brain recently.
What if catastrophic environmental collapse, ill timed with some kind of solar electromagnetic disruption, has driven humanity away from centers of population into wilderness regions where most technology was unsalvageable? Sort of a pre-Shanarah before everyone forgot that the ruins used to be skyscrapers and that trolls were once human.
It doesn’t matter where anything used to be because it all got jumbled up when the earth shifted on its axis, portions of the earth turned inside out. The land is the sea and the sea is land. A rifts like world where any scape or scope can be encountered from one region to another.
Or we can play Battletech.

Re: Revolution Calling
I like the brainstorming!
Wild West over dystopia works for post apocalyptic
Tech can be salvaged bits or magi-tech (use magic rules, re-skinned as tech)
Firebolt is a rifle
Shocking grasp is a glove
Fireball is a rocket
Shield is an energy shield
Etc
More ideas!

Re: Revolution Calling
I’m okay with actual magic, as per Shadow Run. Maybe it’s derived from a combination of elements, changing geo-magnetics, mutant genetics, harnessed technologies, alien influences that have been unearthed by the apocalypse, and true faith.

Re: Revolution Calling
I was thinking that the awakening could be virus-based. A series of pandemics (which also contributed to the societal collapse) led to a massive decline in the population (shoutout to 12 Monkeys), but also uncovered a select few who developed magical acumen from a combination of experimental treatments and genetic mutations.
I like the Wild West aesthetic for post-apoc, in my mind that looks a lot like Denzel Washington movie Book of Eli, but without the cars & automatic weapons. Mechanization doesn’t really fit in a true post apocalypse unless mining and petroleum refining industries somehow maintained operations, which seems unlikely.
I think 100 years past the breakdown is about right. Enough time for most (but not all) tech and machines to be destroyed and new tribes & communities to form, but still a generational connection to the before-times.
