Vehicle proficiency (land or water) functions much like a Tool.
If you have that proficiency, you can add your prof bonus to any check you make. Tools and vehicle prof are NOT tied to any single ability as it represents a broader knowledge.
For example, see pgs 154-155 of PHB.
For more details see pg 17-19 of the Nautical Adventures 5e for the different roles that the party can take (officers) on a ship. Its similar to crew/ship rules from SW. I know Alan read this, thats why i asked him to play captain and assign roles.
Hoist sails would be water vehicle prof ( WVP) + STR +d20
Turn the ship, setting the sails to turn, is WVP + WIS +d20
Etc

Sam should disengage from the worg.
Wind direction is the variable here.
If the wind is blowing from the stern, port, or starboard, Sam should move to one of the belaying pins for the mainsail, pull the pin or slash the line and swing up on the leveraged rope (acrobatics) as the boom holding the mainsail drops to the open position. This should at least get the sail partway open and provide enough force to pull Sam up into the rigging if he swings. (Hawkes was going to do something similar a couple rounds ago if the anchor hadn't been snubbed).
If the wind is blowing from the bow, Sam should weigh anchor before moving to the pinrail to be in position for round 2. Weighing anchor should add sailing proficiency to a strength roll.
Renda, undaunted by the dusty entre in front of him should occupy the worg. Hawkes knows better than to expect him to sail on an empty stomach. He should stand ready to help with the anchor or sails in round 2 if necessary.
Sjon should create a tidal wave from the aft and with the wind if possible. (Next round a wind gust into the sail unless he has an ability to cast two spells).
Crispix:. Read option
If Sam sets the main sail this round, Crispy should blast the anchor rope with a firebolt from close range. It is replaceable.
If Sam weighs anchor, then crispix should help.
Hawkes can make a piloting check. As a bonus action he will grant crispy an inspiration die.

ok, first of all, Sam isn't trying skills that require much strength, as he would have a shit roll at them.
It makes more sense for someone with strength to do those actions.
Is the anchor held by rope? Sam can attempt to cut it loose for now.

Renda' is frustrated that there is no meat left on Rogan. He is still enraged as he scoops the accursed dagger up off the deck, and being a creature of instinct, will react to it more on a gut level than an intellectual one...his first thought is to try and destroy it. What does his gut tell him?
From the PHB pg 178:

Wind from port
@Josh - most DCs for basic tasks are pretty low. Remember 5e uses low DCs and a low Prof bonus. These tasks have to be accomplishable by NPC sailors. Changing direction of sails is DC 10 for example
Sorry, Renda. Cursed meat leaves more than indigestion in your gut. Montezuma's Revenge looks mild in comparison.
@Matt - nice roll and great use of the Inspiration dice of Divine origin, which came, i remind you from using your Move action to eat worg guts instead of making a tactical move. Keep this choice in mind
Renda picks up the Krakken blade. He is surprised to feel a kindred spirit: the Lizardman God of Hunger and Rivers Elyssyss. Renda's gut tells him he should spend some quality bonding time with it. Renda's gut also tells him he is hungry for more worg meat!
Renda can pick up the blade as part of a move and still has an action.
@Alan - great understanding of naval operations!
Anyone else going to get this Cog seaworthy?

Spell save DC: 16
Conditions: water breathing, Healing Spirit active at H7
Once Sam has the anchor up and everyone else has acted and had a chance to partake of the Healing Spirit totem if they so chose, Sjon will switch his concentration and use one of his level 4 slots to cast Control Water. He reaches down to squeeze a bit more water from the hem of his shirt and rubs his wet thumb across the dusty ladder as his focus shifts to the bay below the ship. His goal is to use the 'Flood' effect to create a wave to carry the cog seaward. If the ship is pointed in the right direction, the wave will propel it out of the bay. If the ship is not pointed in the right direction, he will use the wave to push the bow in the direction of travel this turn.
As he is currently safe 25' up the foremast, he will stay put.

Sam puts his back into the anchor wheel and hauls it up!
Sjon delays his wave until the rest of the party takes their turn.
the ship is currently pointed about 90 degrees off of the bay opening. it needs to turn towards the starboard side (of course)
Renda hits with 1b, 2b and 3a which is more than enough to finish the Worg.
waiting on Crispy
sails need to be raised
raising sails STR + WVP + d20
Then either sails set (WIS) or let Joe make waves to turn the ship towards starboard and let the wind catch

Gotcha. The wind is out of the port side, the anchor is up, and sails have dropped.
As such, Sjon will take his action as described abovee. Washing the wave across the bow on the port side with the intent of turning the ship as a half-hard come about to starboard so the cog is facing out of the bay with favorable winds.

Ok, the anchor is up, but the sails were not raised as Crispy failed the roll. That's why I was checking, since the anticipated conditions weren't met.
Sjon calls forth a wave! The ship heaves and shifts direction 90 degrees to the starboard. It is now pointing out of the bay.

Hawkes can grant an attack using "commander's strike.". Can he similarly grant a sailing action?

In spirit that sounds appropriate to a nautical adventure, but let's check the rules...
Commander’s Strike. When you take the Attack
action on your turn, you can forgo one o f your attacks
and use a bonus action to direct one o f your companions
to strike. When you do so, choose a friendly creature
who can see or hear you and expend one superiority die.
That creature can immediately use its reaction to make
one w eapon attack, adding the superiority die to the
attack’s damage roll.
ok, so if Hawkes takes the attack action and gives up his attack, he can direct another person to make a Sailing related check gaining the superiority die to the roll. They have to use their reaction to make the sailing check
that seems fair to me, go for it

it's really still the same fight and the tentacles were already in the sequence, so let's just stick with that
there are 3 tentacles that can be targeted, 2 in the water and 1 grappling the ship (AC 12)
I don't think we need as a map, since it's really about getting the ship going, not fighting a legendary sea monster

Renda' Mon
HP: 81/88
SPD: 45
AC: 18
Prof: +3
Ki pool: 3/6
Condition; RAGED; +2 strength-based melee attacks, resistance vs slash, pierce, bludge
Advantage on DEX saves vs things he can see.
ADVANTAGE ON STR BASED ATTACKS FOR THIS ROUND.
ENEMIES HAVE ADVANTAGE ON ATTACKS AGAINST HIM THIS ROUND
Lightning flashes, reflecting from Renda's black reptilian eyes, as he is suddenly overcome by something far beyond thought and more primal than the rage he channels in battle.
"Elyss-yss...!"
He bellows in a raspy, reverent tone as he picks up the worg carcass and drags it to the railing with him. A trail of gore winds behind on the deck. Renda sees no ship and no crew...It is night, He is a hatchling again, among his first Clan, old enough to kill, but he has not tasted the flesh of the enemy yet and so cannot sing with the Warriors. On the river banks dance dozens of Holy Men in bright paint and glowing plants, weaving in and out of the dark jungle like mad dreams, spinning, singing, beating drums, calling out charms and wards against demonry. In the trees hang the shrunken, preserved heads of many interlopers who have invaded our home, trophies offered to Elyss-yss, the ever hungry. For all rivers are one water, and all hungers are the law. The river must flow and hunger must be fed. So is the law of the Crocodile King, Elyss-yss.
"Elyss-yss...!"
Standing at the railing, Renda will use the Kracken blade to open up a savage gash in own chest, adding his own blood, and therefore that of his Clan, to that of the ritual offering he is preparing. When it is soaked, he will raise it high above his head.. shouting -
"Mighty Elyss-yss, King of Hungry Water, We offer feast of enemy flesh, as is LAW!"
And then throws the offering into the water.
That's basically a move and an attack, right? Turn over.

The storm ceases as rapidly as it appeared and the tentacles retreat into the blackness of Wyvern Bay. Elyss-yss has been satisfied by Renda's sacrifice.
I have to say Matt, you did a phenomenal job picking up on story elements - thank you for reading and paying attention!
You caught that Rogan was going to use the sacrificial Krakken blade on himself, that he sacrificed something precious to him (his son) in the backstory narrative and that the Gods can be appeased with such sacrifices. You tied the backstory elements into your own creative backstory. Thus, you fleshed out your character and the world at the same time!
Renda used the blade on himself and sacrificed the Worg which he had killed in battle. Renda has consistently eaten his kills in combat. This is tied to his religion and personal code - so sacrificing his kill is precious to Renda.
An Inspiration point really is not sufficient here. Renda is granted a BOON from Elyss-yss.
Elyss-yss' Blessing (like Dark One's Blessing from Warlock)
Whenever Renda reduces an enemy to 0 HP AND stops to eat it (bonus or move action) Renda gains 1d10+ WIS temporary HP.
Renda must remain in good standing with Elyss-yss or the Boon is stripped.

The encounter is over. The cog is safely in the party's control and no longer in danger.
I will start a new thread once we wrap this up. What do you guys want to do now?
some suggestions, but I prefer if you direct your own course....
sail out of Wyvern Bay to.....
go ashore and finish off Rogan's crew
search the ship
look for a port to make repairs

Pyriannix knows he should stay and help with the ship, but the guys seem to have it under control. The shore party still draws breath and they must burn for what they did to help Rogan kill Gundren. They. Must. Burn.
“Uh..hey guys...I’ll be, uh...right back”.
Crispy vaults over the rail, with 9ish minutes of flight time remaining, and makes a beeline for the shore at Water Surface +5’

Hawkes did pick up on the whole sacrifice thing, but finds it creepy and worthy of further study. "Renda, to what have you tied us?"
"Aye Sam, into the bay, and pay the whores to stay their tongues."
"Belay that flight Crispy. Don't try to fight them by yourself! Gundran would not have you rush to your death like some fool deck swab. He would have a plan.
We have no doubt drawn their attention now, but they know not the fate of their crew. Our quarry will be alert, but they WILL come to investigate. We can disguise ourselves and lie in wait. You can burn them in one rowboat."
"Now what's become of those who went overboard?"
Search the ship, park in the bay, lie in wait.

As far as Crispy knows, Hawkes isn’t really the captain, yet, and he isn’t much for planning anyway. He presses on to the shore, consumed by rage and grief.

"Moreover, we all still have the ability to lie in wait underwater. I agree that the currs should meet their end here" Sjon says as he scales the ladder to the deck.

"They'll get away Crispy!" Hawkes rebukes more assertively. "You'll stir them and disperse them. You canney chase them all, and Gundrens vengeance will be foiled. They's got magic too, ya know... If you won't listen to me as Captain, then listen to your friend! Somewhere in your burning heart is a part as knows I'm right! Sjon has good plan. Will you accompany us or nay?". "What does the crew say?"

Sweet, nicely told GM!
Renda's appetite seems saited by wrath and ritual. He sulks around the deck, clearing away the corpses...stashing a few of the juicy looking bits away in nooks and crannies of the ship for later.
If otherwise directed by Hawkes, or someone else who appears to be taking overall charge, he helps without much question.
Renda agrees that the shore parry should be dealt with. They either become clan or remain food, but leaving an enemy breathing is bad for the long life of the clan.

Crispy skims the surface of the bay like an osprey on the hunt. He sees a single empty launch tied up.
sure, go ahead and roll perception
The Cog is about 100m out in the bay. You can all see Crispy but yelling across a football field would be noisy.

Crispy finds that most of the noise and activity center around a tavern\brothel called Siren's Song. There are numerous sailors, scoundrels, pirates and working folk. Crispy isn't sure who belongs to Rogan's crew.
Sam and Hawkes search Rogan's cog and find that it is fully stocked for voyage. They find 5 chests in Rogan's cabin. They appear to made of the same wood and of identical design. There are a dozen extra ballista missiles.
Neither Renda nor Sjon can see much. They see several smaller ships, like cogs, docked at the port. There are no other ships anchored in the bay, just the one you occupy.
The party's launch is tucked away in the cove, as you chose to go swimming. Rogan's launch is tied to the dock.
