Anyway, I was thinking of playing a Bothan explorer. This character is an ex ace fighter pilot that went into semi-retirement a few years back. All he does now is travels the galaxy with his jawa buddy Wigg-wuk in their Alderanian Star Freighter, sometimes carrying cargo or passengers to make a few extra credits. This bothan, named Bos Lobo, has lived a hard life so far, doing eveything from fighting in wars, gathering intel for the Bothan spynet, being stranded for several months on the moon of Endor (with nothing to eat but Ewok!), and even enslaved on the planet Kessel for a time - forced to work in the spice mines for two years until he escaped. His favorite passtime now is getting high on spice with his jawa compatriot and blasting off into some uncharted region of space for days at a time.

Early in Lobo's career (pre Endor, Kessel) he was flying starfighter escort for the Republic backed Calamari Freight Lines.  It was a good gig, paid well and Bos got a lot of experience fighting off both the Empire and pirates.

    Backstory - Bos Lobo Narito10

On his current mission, Bos and "The Regulators" (his mercenary squadron) were escorting a Calamari Freigther, named Narito Princess.

    Backstory - Bos Lobo Z_95_h10

The Narito Princess was large enough to hold his squadron in their launch bays, so they would only deploy 4 at time unless needed.  The Narito crew had been acting rather odd, ever since the last pick up.  The cargo was labelled "Cultural Artifacts: Voss".

    Backstory - Bos Lobo Sabacc10

They were way out in the deep Fringe.  Bos was in the Narito mess hall playing Sabacc with his fellow Regulators and crew of the Narito.  Boss (Bothan in the red jacket) was having a great night.  There are about a dozen people watching, both Narito crew and fellow Regulators.

The hand has come down to Bos and 2 from the Narito crew.  Bos feels strongly about his hand, but isn't a "sure thing." The bid is to Bos. The other 2 watch him nervously.

How does Bos want to play out the end game?

Bos continues with the game without using any of his innate force talents.

He makes sense motive checks on the other two players while putting forth a "straight as hell" poker face using his bluff skill.
If Bos senses that the other players are seriously bluffing those nervous looks, and they may have great hands, he folds and cuts his losses.
If they aren't bluffing, and he feels they are actually nervous about their hands, then Bos keeps them betting as long as possible.

    Sense motive checks: 18 & 17 YES! (total of 28 and 27)

Bluff check: 2 tongue (total of 22)

Bos senses they are genuinely nervous, but not about their hands.  Something else is bothering them.  Bos puts on his poker face, but his Bothan fur ripples with excitement and spoils his bluff.

    Backstory - Bos Lobo Gran_a10

A three-eyed Gran, one of the Narito crew, throws down his Sabacc cards in disgust,  " I knew it, damn Bothan, trying to trick us.....  you just want us to wager the cargo, don't you?  Well you can't have it!  It is mine, mine I tell you!!"

The other Narito crew member jumps up and gets in his face, "Shut up, you stupid goat!  Captain said we aren't even supposed to talk about it.  We are going to divide it up after we dispose of these mercanaries, remember?!?!"

    Backstory - Bos Lobo Granfi10

Several of the other Narito crew members join in on both sides, fingers and guns are being pointed at everyone in the room.  Many of the Narito crew have a wild look in their eyes and are accusing the Regulators of trying to steal the cargo.

Bos feels a strange disturbance in the Force here..... something dark and very old......

Bos Lobo doesn't like this one bit. But he also knows the best way to calm an angry crowd is to make them forget what they were fighting over in the first place.

Bos uses his Entrall force power to get the attention of everyone in the room, and to neutralize the anger in the atmosphere.

"Everyone, please! None of us need to fight, captains orders or no. We are all here for games, and merryment, and to get a belly full of drink. Lets not waste the night, when the point of all this is to forget such things!"

Bos flips his winning hand over at the table. "There! No worries my mates. Keep your money and I shall keep mine. Time for a drink, me thinks!"

Bos goes on for some time using his diplomacy to ease everyone back into a merry mood.

    Well played!

Bos calms the crowd down and everyone begins enjoying themselves again, although there is a tension that never quite leaves the air.

Bos Lobo immediately uses his force power Good Hope on his fellow regulators, while giving them a short pep talk over the radio.

"Switch to B formation. I'll take center. Dutch, try to get behind them and go for the engines. These scurvy pirates don't have anything on regulators! Huah!"

Good Hope grants +2 to attack rolls, damage, skill checks, saving throws, and morale checks. 1 creature/level affected for 1 minute/level.

    No, I didn't, it's ok.

This isn't a minute-by-minute style of storytelling for the backstory. We are painting in broad strokes - like the first gambling scene. I just want to establish some history, some future plot hooks (since it will be sandbox style), some NPCs and give players a chance to walk around in their character's shoes since they are starting at 10th.

    Backstory - Bos Lobo Sw_pir10

A group of Pirate frigates drop out of hyper space around the Narito!

The Regulator's usual plan is to hold off pirates to buy the Narito time to calculate a jump into Hyper Space.  The Narito relays the jump coordinates to the Regulators so they can follow.

Z-95 do have hyper drive engines, but short range only and can't carry much Hyper-matter (fuel).

Bos and his squadron do their job well, especially buffed by Bos.  These Pirates are extremely well coordinated (for Pirates) however and they manage a few good hits on the Narito's engines.

The Narito jumps to safety.  Bos loses 2 Regulators, but he and Dutch survive.

Back on the Narito, the mood is somber after the loss.  The Narito is leaking Hyper-matter and the Hyper Drive Engine is damaged.

The Narito is essentially adrift in deep space without a Hyper drive.  The Captain plots a course for the nearest M-class (habitable, stolen from ST) planet - a frozen ice planet called Hoth.  It will take many days to get there on impulse engines.  Food stores begin to run out.

Morale continues to deteriorate until late one night.....

Some of the Regulators and most of the crew of the Narito go mad.  They have a wild, dark look in their eyes as they roam the Narito in a big pack.

    Backstory - Bos Lobo Sw_rak11

Bos has heard the deep spacers spin yarns about "deep-space madness", but this tale will rival them all.

They murder and begin to eat anyone they come across.  Bos still senses the ancient Dark Side presence and believes it is affecting the crew.

    Backstory - Bos Lobo Sw_rak10

How does Bos try to survive?

study again, broad strokes, maybe a single skill roll

Bos Lobo's first instinct is to turn Invisible so he isn't targeted by any of these roaming ghoul packs.

"Someone on board must be responsible... I sense the dark side at work here." he thinks to himself.
"Who on board could have done this? Who... or perhaps what?"
"At any rate I don't have time to hang around. This place will be the death of me!"

While invisible, Bos sneaks up to the command center to have a quick look around. Hoping to catch a glimpse of any mysterious persons that
could be responsible for all this. If he makes it inside the command center, Bos will deactivate the ship's shield generator, rerouting
    all power to the engines.
    Stealth check: 17+16=33  Cool

His invisibility should last for about 10 minutes at a time. If necessary he can use this power 5 times before running out of force.
Bos Lobo's next move is to scavenge the ship for several days of food and water, then pick through the storage room near the
mess hall for non-perishables and bottles of water.
He also goes to his storage locker and grabs his few meager possessions, as well as a few items from the recently killed regulators.
"Thanks for your sacrifice boys. May you rest in the force."

After looting what he can, Bos will try to makes his way to the hangar bay and escape in his Z-95 headhunter.
"It may not get me very far out here in deep space, but it's better than being killed and eaten by these dark-side ghouls!"
Should Bos Lobo make it out into space, he will attempt to destroy the frigate with his proton torpedoes (assuming he was able to get the shields down).
Bos will then use his navigation computer to plan a route towards Hoth, hoping to reach it before his supplies run out.

Bos is successful at sneaking around the ship, using the Force to hide him.  He is able to rerout power to the engines.  It is slow going and Bos has to spend long hours crawling through air-ducts and hiding.

Bos manages to scrounge up what little supplies are left.  The crazed crew seem disinterested in food, other than people.  The crew has begun speaking a new language to each other, Bos has never heard it before and it sounds strange, as if it belongs to a different species.

Bos does not see any other figures or presences on board the Narito.  Bos notices the crazed crew tend to stay near the cargo hold - that is where Bos senses the most concentrated darkness.

Bos manages to escape the Narito on board his Z-95 Headhunter!  He notices that the ship has drifted into a high orbit over Hoth.  Apparently he spent more time hiding than he thought.

Bos' proton torpedoes rock the Narito and it begins a fiery descent, caught in Hoth's gravity well.

I'm sure there weren't any survivors on board. Still, it may be worth checking out the wreck to see if any cargo is still intact.
I've heard Hoth can be a dangerous place if one goes out and about unprepared. It might be best to land at a safe port and
explore the crash site at a later time.

Bos Lobo flies his Z-95 near the crash site and marks it on his navi-computer. He then proceeds to the nearest space port
to resupply and gather some cold-weather gear. After a hot meal and a good night's rest, Bos returns to the crash site
and attempts to search for the source of the darkside presence.

There are no established ports or any cities whatsoever on Hoth.

    LORE ITEM!

    https://lodgestgaming.forumotion.com/t265-lore-and-history-discovered#14528

Bos is able to mark the crash site on his Nav computer.

study I just checked Bos' knowledges (nice!) but some of them don't really apply to Star Wars.  I probably forgot to mention that in the main thread, but I would suggest the following substitutions:

    Planes = Planetary Systems
    Local = Streetwise
    Arcana = Force
    Nobility = Alien Species

Bardic knowledge still applies, of course.

Bos knows that there isn't much of anything in the Anoat system - Hoth.... asteroids.... Bespin!  Bos has heard there is a Tabana gas mining colony there.  He might be able to make it on sub-light engines, but it will take a while.

I'll be sure to update by knowledge skills. Thanks Chris.

Once inside Hoth's atmosphere, Bos Lobo tries scanning for any ports in the area. Perhaps hoping beyond hope that some
    colony was setup here.
After finding nothing in the way of civilization, he lands his Z-95 on Hoth's icy surface about 50 yards from the wreckage
    of the Narito Princess.
"Looks like I'll have to search the wreckage with what I've got. Shouldn't take too long."

Bos keeps his flight helmet on, dons his tracker's vest, his thick robe, and all-weather cloak to protect him from the cold.
Before disembarking his ship, Bos scans the area with his binoculars for any dangerous life forms or signs of intact cargo.

Bos then spends no longer than an hour scouring the area for valuables before heading back to his ship.
Once Bos leaves Hoth he will make an attempt to reach Bespin. Perhaps there he can find a transport to take him back
home to Bothawui or on to new adventures?

Icy winds howl and the temperature is around -50 degrees.  Snow drifts are already covering the impact craters.  Bos can still sense the dark presence.... it is coming from the cargo crates of "Cultural Artifacts: Voss".

Bos feels like something sinister is trying to burrow its way into to his mind.... he begins hearing voices.....

Bos cloaks himself in the Force and leaves Hoth before he can conduct a full search of the wreckage, but it didn't appear there was anything useful.

Bos uses the Force to slow his respiration and heart rate, while he floats along at impulse power towards Bespin - a giant planet with a Tabana-gas atmosphere.  During his twilight slumber, his dreams are filled with the nightmare horror of the Narito Princess.

He comes out of his hibernation in time to see a floating space port on his sensors.  (Cloud City won't be built for a couple thousand years)

    Backstory - Bos Lobo Bespin10

There appears to be some cargo freighters coming and going off Bespin.... signs of life!

"I'm saved!" Bos shouts to himself.
He lands his Z-95 on one of the empty platforms and enters the station. His first order of business is to find a place to stay and some hot food. Bos is thinking of taking some time off from warring and adventuring. Perhaps he will take a short vacation here before finding some more work.

A few weeks pass as Bos polishes up on his gambling and drinking skills. As usual Bos tries making friends with the locals and any ship crews passing through the port. Bos tries acquiring some lotus-spice (a favored drug among Bothans, but illegal within the empire), thinking this cloud platform would be the perfect spot to trip out for a while. Shocked

If all goes well Bos Lobo ends his vacation after a month, then begins advertising his services to any freighter captains passing through.
He's most likely running low on credits and becomes restless for adventure once more.

Bos lands at Highmark (floating city\station).  Highmark is the star wars equivalent of Deadwood.  Lots of money from the gas mining, lots of drifters, outlaws, gamblers, saloons, booze\drugs, whores, back alley shivs, and gun fights.   Bos finds a lotus-spice supplier with ease, compliments of the saloon\hotel he is staying at called the Quartz.

Bos enjoys himself... a little too much.  One particular night, while high on Lotus, Lady Luck deserts him and he loses his Z-95 in the pot!

Now stranded and eventually broke, Bos hooks up with a freighter captain looking for some rough hands.  The pay is good and the ship is heading back into the Core worlds.  Bos figures his luck is finally turning around....

Unfortunately, the job was a ruse and Bos finds himself shang-hai'd into service with the White Maw pirates!

Bos is serving aboard the Black Joke, under Captain Benito de Soto - the same ship that attacked the Narito.

de Soto is a Klatooinian, he is cruel and enjoys inflicting suffering on his prey

    Backstory - Bos Lobo Pirate10

The crew are hardened space pirates

    Backstory - Bos Lobo Pirate11

But Bos does meet one that he befriends, a Jawa named Wigg-wuk

    Backstory - Bos Lobo Blizzc10

Wigg enjoys tech to the extent that he can build bigger and better guns.  Wigg goes heavy into every fight and always has Bos' back.

How does Bos spend his time\survive on board the Black Joke?

At first, Bos is completely disoriented by being shang-hai'd. He knows his life means very little to those around him, and they will dispose of him if he proves untrustworthy or weak. Bos begins by simply going along with the captain's orders and carrying out his tasks in the most competent and efficient way possible. He always sounds eager for more work, and cooperates with those around him.

As time passes, Bos tries to win over the crew with a few well-placed, crude jokes here and there. During down times he tells stories and sings songs to the crew to ease tensions (Bardic Influence). He tries to stay away from gambling for money, as he doesn't want to cause any fights.
Bos learnes that his jawa friend, Wigg-wuk was also shang-hai'd from Tatooine, and finds that they have similar interests in exploring the galaxy. Wigg-wuk agrees to help Bos Lobo get rid of the captain and take over the ship. Afterward, they would work together to make an honest living as freighter pilots.
Once Bos Lobo gets to know the crew pretty well, he begins slipping in a few subtle derogatory remarks about the captain. Nothing too obvious, but enough to make the crew start to subconsciously detest their leader. Whenever possible, Bos uses his force Suggestion and Charm abilities on the crew to make them believe he could make them all rich (if only the captain were not standing in their way).

"You know, freighter pilots can earn even more money than pirates without all the danger. If we ran honest cargo with this ship, and could defend ourselves from other pirates, we would be unstoppable! Perhaps on the next raid the captain could accidentally get shot in the back."

Nice story!  Bos' plan works well.  He slowly gains the trust of many of the crew.  When the moment is right he makes his move!

Unfortunately, Captain Benito de Soto proved to be a more cunning warrior than Bos knew.  Even outnumbered, Captian de Soto managed to fight off the mutiny attempt and almost single handily killed half of his own crew, including his first mate who wanted to be a tramp freighter captain with you.  Captain de Soto marooned Bos and Wigg on the forest moon of Endor as punishment for his mutiny.

    Backstory - Bos Lobo Moon_o10

Captain de Soto knew that the Ewoks would view a Bothan as a predator and make life hard on them.

How do Bos and Wigg-wuk escape Endor?

"Well Wigg-wuk, we really stepped in it this time. Lets try to find some shelter, food and water."
Bos Lobo is a spacer, not a survivalist, but he does his best.

    Survival check: 6

The moon of Endor is a spooky place, full of strange sounds and teeming with life.
After a short time of searching the wilderness in vein, Bos and Wigg-wuk take refuge under a giant redwood tree. After an hour of waiting hopelessly, the pair is approached by a group of 5 humans. They introduce themselves, and explain they were all crew members aboard a scientific research vessel that had crash landed on the moon several months ago. They have supplies back at their crash site, but have had no luck in repairing several damaged parts of their ship. Many of the crew, including the maintenace droids were damaged/killed when they crashed, and they could use some assistance from Bos and Wigg-wuk.

For the next several weeks, Bos and Wigg-wuk work with the crew repairing the damaged components in exchange for food and shelter among the company of scientists. At one point, the cook Reygan, asks Bos if he enjoys the Ewok soup they've been eating. To this day he's still unsure if it was a joke.

    Backstory - Bos Lobo Star-Wars-Ship-scarecrow

    Engineering check: 11+19=30

Apparently, Endor is littered with crashed vessels. The scientists discovered a few of them during hunting expeditions. Bos Lobo and Wigg-wuk make good use of the scrap parts in repairing the research vessel, and even discover a few alien "artifacts" in the wreckage. Bos uses his force powers: Mage Hand, Mending, Identify, and Unseen Servant to assist in the retrieval of parts and repairs of the research vessel.

Eventually, the ship is repaired and is able to take to the skies.

Bos and Wigg earn the gratitude of the scientists.

Were they Republic, Imperial or other (corporate, fringe\underworld, ?) scientists?

The scientists agree to take Bos and Wigg anywhere within their means.

Where do the pair go and what adventures do they seek next?

I was thinking these scientists were geologists working for a private corporation. Their job was to seek out habitable worlds to establish mining colonies. The mining corporation they work for has struck a deal with the budding trade federation to help them sell essential metals, gemstones, and minerals that they harvest. Lately they have been seeking out other worlds at the edge of the galaxy where nobody has claimed any mineral rights. That's how they ended up stranded on Endor.

Bos and Wigg are both itching to explore more of the galaxy and perhaps work as a team on a deep space vessel. Spending time in civilization is okay for a time, but they tend to get in trouble there. Wigg-wug does want to visit his family clan back on Tatooine, so maybe the scientists could take us there? Perhaps the pair end up working some smuggling jobs for the Hutts?

study Sure, that sounds good.  Bos and Wigg visit the clan on Tatooine.  From what I gather, Jawa are actually evolved from a rodent type species, so I picture techno-garbage burrows and such.  Bos and Wigg eventually get hooked up with a smuggling crew.  They explore the galaxy together for several years and have many adventures together.

At some point, their smuggling crew gets captured by the Imperials.  Bos and Wigg get separated.  Bos ends up doing hard time working in the spice mines of Kessel.  Bos has no idea what happened to Wigg, but he wouldn't have been suitable for work on Kessel.  Kessel is full of other aliens, mostly strong ones like Wookies, Trandoshans, Nikto, some Bothans, Mon Cals, etc.

    Backstory - Bos Lobo Kessel10

study I am going to leave Bos here (sorry, not the most pleasant place) for a bit.  I need to try and get the other backstories up to a certain point, before we continue.

While slaving away on Kessel.....   Bos meets a Force sensitive Gotal named T'son Hoil

    Backstory - Bos Lobo Gotal10

As if by the will of the Force, they are chained next to each other on a work crew.  They pass the long days and months telling each other stories of their past.

T'son tells Bos all about his adventures and his friends - a Jedi named Daxx, a Wookie named Sharn, a Rodian soldier Rahku

study assume Bos is up to date on the previous adventure

    https://lodgestgaming.forumotion.com/t198-episode-1-recap-thread-working

T'son and Bos begin planning for a prison break or an escape, which ever comes first.  They know it will take some "event" to distract the guards but also coordination with a ship from off-world.  It is mostly talk, since they have access to neither currently.  But it is a good mental game and it passes the time.  T'son and Bos are able to make preliminary plans with all the slaves in their pod which includes some Wookies, Trandoshans, humans and other aliens.
