Hawkes shrugs. “Just fly if it gives way? Aye Crispy, but be smart.”

Crispy will advance carefully down the damaged staircase, prepared to burn his remaining sorcery points to Quicken a Fly spell should the stone give way...

Crispy readies himself to fly as the rest of the party looks on. He approaches the step where the diagonal crack is showing, running from the cliffside across a series of 5 stairs to the exposed open-side. As Crispy carefully puts his foot on the first step all seems well enough to continue. As his large foot makes landing on the second step, the weight of his 275 pound frame causes the crack to split open. A pop is heard underfoot and the 5-step section starts to shift and fall away.

Crispy will burn his last 3rd level spell to cast a Fly as an action.

It is so. Crispy instinctively casts fly to remove his weight from the equation and is now aloft above the 5-stair section that has begun to peel off the cliff-face. Any further disturbance will surely cause it to fully dislodge and fall to the ground below.

Crispy’s carrying capacity is 180lbs. DM would shuttling peeps over the break require strength checks?

I think STR checks for anything over carrying capacity would be fair. Target DC would likely increase with each attempt. Like lifting max weight, it gets harder each time.

Ok, can I get weights sited from each PC and for Vellum?

Hawkes weighs 175 with gear.

Vellum weighs about 170 lbs from eyeing him up.

Abi weighs 111 lbs without gear. She has 50' of hemp rope. She'll climb down or be carried, she's fine with either.

Doesn’t look like anyone weighs enough to truly tax Crispy on Str checks. We can lower gear down separately if anyone is close

Renda leaps forth with abandon, knowing that he is well protected from harm. His perfect 3-point landing is impressive to the onlookers above. The party and Crispy coordinate efforts to ferry everyone and their gear down to the ground below the broken stair segment.

"Follow me and keep quiet", Vellum says. He leads the group along the cliff toward the Keep wall, pausing to check around every corner before advancing the party forward. The group passes by an obviously ransacked set of homes. Brutal encounters are betrayed by the occasional corpse of townsfolk who were unable to flee and fought back against their besiegers. At each instance of such, Vellum sighs a quiet prayer for the fallen.

As the party approaches the wall surrounding the Keep, he turns to Sam. "It has been so long since I have used this door. If you wouldn't mind finding it for us?"

Easy enough. The wand points Sam towards a section of wall where the secret door stands. Blended nearly perfectly into the face of the stone wall, it is plain to see how an unsuspecting passer-by would never notice it. Vellum runs his hands along the wall until he find the proper finger placement to engage the opening mechanism. The sturdy, albeit short, door swings inward as their passage is revealed. Once again the group finds themselves in a storeroom of the Keep's lower level. This one appears to have plenty of older stored commodities. Crates of mining supplies, hand tools, oil lamps, etc.

Vellum navigates the party into the heart of the Keep. As the group emerges from the Eastern wing into the common areas, glances and whispers among the sequestered citizens are evident. A pair of dwarven men dressed in vestments similar to those worn by Vellum give instruction to a younger acolyte, who dashes off. No doubt to send word to Gamble of the party's return. They make a beeline towards the Magister with great relief and beaming smiles on their faces.

"By the beards of our Fathers!", one exclaims. "We weren't sure we would ever see you again, Franc"

The Magister gestures towards the group as he responds. "If these kind visitors had not come to my aid, I fear that would have been the case. Your faces are a sight for sore eyes, Hans and Franz, but we haven't the time to chit-chat. Send word among the people that now is our time to retake the city. The enemy is weakened and we must press our advantage! Tell every able-bodied woman and man to arm themselves. We push outward in 2 hours."

Hans and Franz turn heel and set out to disseminate the news.

"I suppose we should find Gamble?"

“Umm..he was, uhh, pretty eager for us to um, find you? So, ummm...yeah...I think we should go...”

If we have two hours to spare before the battle, Abi will take a short rest.

As the group watches, they can see the word spreading around the protected citizens of Bhornalduhr.  Energy fills the great halls of the Keep at the news of Vellum's rescue pass from lips to ears.  While they wait, Vellum begins addressing the various people who come ready to fight back against their vile oppressors.  His plans of advancing into the city-at-large include sweep teams for the markets and residential areas, coordination messengers to redirect resources where the are needed most in the skirmishes, and a cadre of his most trusted and able surviving warriors to assault the courtyard of the temple and reseal the pathway by which the interlopers gained access into the temple for their initial attack.  All very impressive, as none of the crew would have assumed Vellum to be a competent strategist.

A short time later, Gamble makes his way to the group.

"My friends, I knew we could count on you to return the Magister to us.  It appears he has already begun activating the people to claim back what is ours.  What is the news from your journey inside the temple?"

“We did find mindflayers. But few.” Hawkes is still expecting a plot twist. “There were some of those floating eyeball creatures. Vellum was under a spell, but walking... compelled towards the tomb and it’s sarcophagus. There was another mindflayer, but perhaps he was of the undead. It was very powerful and quick. When we slew it, Vellum appeared to snap out of the spell.”

“It seems too easy. There were other monsterous sounding creatures on our rudder, but we managed to evade them. Sounded like a small army but we didn’t see them.

Lacking orders and having a somewhat saited stomach, renda dins a warm patch of sunlight to sleep in.
