    After the long rest. Brock comes to the party after spending a few hours in the library.

    "I have been reading more of the ancient scrolls.

    The Demon’s name was Malorcha the Scourge. She is vile, destructive and seeks to dominate everyone; at least that's the legend. She hasn’t been seen for centuries. She was banished back to her home plane. I think the Witch, if she is the conduit, will probably return to the temple site; assuming it is being used again. We will have to travel through the badlands.. they are full of giants, goblin-folk and other foul creatures. We can ride most of the way but it will get difficult for mounts after a while. Forgive me, I haven't been there in many years. There may be other dangers. The area was declared off limits when we reached an accord with the giants... they were supposed to stop raiding our lands and we would then leave them be.

    We should bring extra provisions and water. Most of the water there is fetid and foul."

    "one more thing... this symbol is shown in the records but the rest of the page that explains what it is is missing" (he shows it to the party)

    Brock understands your concern. "Now that we know that's a curse, I can help with that with Thuenor's blessing."

    He produces a scroll with 1 Remove Curse on it. "I found this in the archives below, I am amazed it survived but Thuenor is very powerful. This could be why they have been targeting his shrines and temples."

    "My order was first established after Malorcha had decimated our people, and the mountain dwarves. Both peoples established a temple and monastery to train and educate a select few warriors that were dedicated enough. Unfortunately, there was a schism between our respective temples many years ago. I haven't seen the mountain dwarf lands since I was a wee one."

    Marvin... you see tracks after about an hour. They are no more than a couple days old. It's difficult to determine how many individuals have passed due to the rather constant rain. One thing you do notice is that they are NOT giants - if you had to guess, they are goblins or hobgoblins. They all seem to be leading along the same path that you are taking. There are only occasional copses of trees, here and there. You can see what looks like a forest off in the distance, but it's about a quarter mile from the road/path you're on.

    The tracks are not more than a couple of days old, which doesn’t help us much as that could mean the goblins are anywhere within a 50 mile radius by now.

    What does Marvin know about the typical habits of goblins/hobgoblins? Would his Nature skill cover that? Let’s try:

    Marvin - think CO - they are at a higher altitude above the path and off just slightly in the distance. The are to the south of the road/path.

    The goblin folk are known to be semi-nomadic in this area. They stay to themselves and avoid the dwarves for the most part since they don't tend to do well in combat against them (unless they have overwhelming numbers).

    The border guards (all 6 of them) are trying to stay holed up in the timber tower. They say that they have seen fires off in the distance, maybe a mile away. No other disturbances otherwise. Brock says that the border is somewhat easy to cross, unfortunately. But they just don't have the numbers to cover it and keep out all invaders/intruders.

    the dwarves are full of apologies... "there have been some strange and terrible happenings here my lord. None of us has been able to sleep soundly for a week. Every night, half of the garrison is troubled by tortured dreams. We sent a messenger to the Earl.  Did he ever arrive?" (Brock shakes his head in the negative).

    "The fields are drying up and the water is getting poisoned by someone. Sometimes a small group of goblins will come and offer trade goods, but that hasn't happened in over two weeks. In fact, I don't think we've even seen any goblin-folk in the same amount of time... it's like they're just not around anymore. The fires we see are relatively small, like a bonfire but a rather wee one"

    Warhol will summon an owl to recon according to whatever information Zax can glean from the guards.  He will immerse himself in the owls senses. If the owl finds anyone, he will use stealth to land in a nearby tree and listen.

The murderers were a group of giants with purple veins and a horned woman. We were able to kill the giants, but the horned woman disappeared into thin air.     it is mid-day. Remember, the owl's vision will be somewhat diminished due to the mist but it will still be able to scout.

    The dwarf 'sergeant' tells you that they have no idea what is going on. This has never happened before that they are aware of. They normally only need to worry about potential raids from overly aggressive hobgoblins or the occasional fantastic creature. Even the hill giants avoid this area most of the time.

    Warhol busts out a low throaty resonating tone. As a ritual, he casts Augury.  He gathers sticks and stones and stirs them in the dirt while doing a slow graceless dance.

    Augury 2nd-level divination (ritual) Casting Time: 1 minute Range: Self Components: V, S, M (specially marked sticks, bones, or similar tokens worth at least 25 gp) Duration: Instantaneous

    By casting gem-inlaid sticks, rolling dragon bones, laying out ornate cards, or employing some other divining tool, you receive an omen from an otherworldly entity about the results of a specific course of action that you plan to take within the next 30 minutes. The DM chooses from the following possible omens: • Weal, for good results • Woe, for bad results • Weal and woe, for both good and bad results • Nothing, for results that aren’t especially good or bad The spell doesn’t take into account any possible circumstances that might change the outcome, such as the casting of additional spells or the loss or gain of a companion.     Marvin attempts to look sagely off to the northwest “Fire that way, temple that way…perhaps the temple is on fire!” He shrugs, “Welp, we’ll soon find out. I’m going to head down and feed Chopper, then I say we press on.” He pats Zax warmly on the shoulder to show some solidarity with his friend who is far from home, then heads down the ladder.

    Zax broods on the view and gesture from Marvin, "Perhaps home isn't a place at all."  Thoughts of friendship and the road ahead lead his mind to his oldest companion in this realm, Arrod.  Zax is unsure what the horse would want and is surprised at himself for even considering that at all.  Normally, he would just leave a few coins with the stable hand for his care.  But after spending time with the turtle.... now he wonders if Arrod would have his own preference?

    Zax seeks out Warhol who appears to be playing a strange instrument of some kind, though he isn't sure it sounds like music.  He restrains himself from interrupting and waits patiently for him to finish.

    "Glory to you and to your song.  I was wondering if you could... well.... see if Arrod himself has a preference about being boarded here or travelling back to the city on his own or...."   Zax swallows hard at the thought, "set free?  It is possible we don't return.  Even if we do, neither of the first two choices might be any safer than just being a horse in the wild."

    just to be clear, mounted riders would have to deal with difficult terrain most of the time. Assuming Arrod can do that, he could come with. But it wouldn't be the best terrain for mounted warfare.

    ok, well is this a story issue or a rules issue?

    I guess I was hearing a story issue - no mounts from here, no access to food and water, we are about to do a dungeon crawl, wink wink

    if its just "difficult terrain" that only means movement is 1/2 speed, which half of 60 = 30 anyways, so its a wash in terms of travel times

    your horse will be entirely safe here. There are stalls for the rams that the dwarves use and Brock has put his in one of the stalls. He sees your worried look and and says "it will be fine my friend, he will be safe here.. if the sentries have to leave, I will tell them to take the mounts back to the great hall."
