    Unless Warhol has anything else he wants to do (which will be allowed) we will proceed. Zax' get the feeling that Arrod is just fine with the circumstances...


    You set out in the mist and rain. This area, though rather beautiful, is very bleak in general.

    You follow the path, Brock is rather good at guiding but you can tell that he is struggling to find the temple as it was so long ago and he has very little to go on.

    After a few hours (near dusk) you come across a rather disturbing sight. 15 goblins and hobgoblins have been strung up by their feet and it looks like they have been sacrificed. Their throats are slit and there is the body of a Formorian giant that is spread eagle on a makeshift alter; it is quite dead.

    This symbol is actually burned into a nearby rock:

    Zax curses in Shadarese, "quvHa’ Hegh SoH vIneH" (I do not wish dishonorable death for you). He begins to take the bodies down and piles them nearby on whatever flat rock area he can find. He treats the corpses with respect as he prepares a funeral pyre. After the fire is going, he asks Brock and his goat help dragging the twisted giant over.

    * Zax won't search them for loot, since he didnt defeat them in battle, but he wouldnt stop anyone else from checking for clues or valuables. If he saw an obvious clue, like a map or symbol on their bodies or something, he will point it out of course to the others.

He remarks casually to Zax “Well, if they’re still nearby they know we’re on their tail now.” He ducks into whatever cover he can find while he waits for the rest of the party to finish its business here.

    Result of the throw of dice "4d6 +17" :

    4 + 6 + 3 + 5 + 17 = 35


    just as a reference, since the rules kinda suck in this department, Wall of Stone spell has 30 HP per inch of thickness

    so at average 35 damage per swing, which is 6 seconds, that's 350 damage per minute or almost 1 foot of solid stone that Zax can destroy per minute. Zax is willing to spend 10-15 minutes to thoroughly trash this alter, if needed

    You travel for another 3 hours. The tracks continue until you come to rise in the terrain that is very rocky. it will require a climb check. (or something else)

    not more than 20' up.

    The bird flies for about 40'.

    The owl - as you peer through it's eyes, you see someone very similar to the witch you saw. It's male and it's chanting. There are what look like hobgoblins gathered around a chained formorian, two of them are holding the chains that bind him to an alter. The male creature with the tail is making small cuts and chanting in a language you can't understand. This is all taking place in something of a large pit, the rim of which is nothing but sharp rocks and jagged edges. Its almost as if the ground and rock was ripped apart. The path lead into and out of the pit (no more than 10' deep)

    There are also two of these present

    Badlands and Broken Souls - Page 2 Dhergo10

    one of the hobgoblins notices your bird and takes a shot at it with a light crossbow.

    misses it by just a few inches... but he takes his time reloading and points it out to another hobgoblin.

    Zax studies the map and tactical information. He offers his assessment, "Glory to your bird and to your eyes! Primary target is the warlock, as he is likely the leader and most dangerous. Twisted giant might be a willing sacrifice, unclear if release would be a benefit but I suspect we will see by actions of hobgoblins if they free him or try to keep him down. This requires further observation, but he is second target from past experience, if he is indeed an enemy and becomes primary objective to release if he appears allied with us. Warhol, I recommend using your owl as a distraction, since they are keen for sport (fly over head, use dodge action). The terrain should mask our approach, so speed is more important than stealth." Zax winks at Marvin, "I recommend.... FULL FRONTAL ASSAULT!!"

    ok. The owl buzzes the head of the tiefling... he is momentarily distracted and screams "kill that bird!"

    Warhol and Zax' make it up the cliff quite easily... Marvin slips and only makes it part of the way up before his footing give out on a loose rock.

    You are not quite on the map yet.... the baddies seem preoccupied with their ritual. Anything else Marvin would like to try before we basically take another round?

    I think this is a good time for an initiative roll, just for the order of things.

    cannot cast it yet. I gave you basically two movement actions to try and get up.

    However, this is a new round as one of the goblins takes another shot at the owl. The tiefling can see that he missed and he shouts at the others "guard the area" - you two keep the formorian chained!

    DM - just a couple clarification questions

    Is this our surprise round or is it not until we trigger it?
    ie Marvin's spell. we could wait another 6 seconds so he can just start the party, then we all get 1 surprise round, then initiative starts again. or is the spell his surprise action?

    Remember, the owl is taking Dodge action, so all attacks are with Disadvantage
