We probably should have done that upon return to the ship. Reminder for all of us to pause before long rests and make decisions on items, spells, preps for the next adventuring day. I could've put something tasty in there for Hawkes to use.

Id like to point out the awesome idea to animate objects by Mike B. Really creative.
Additional kudos to Matt for being the first one to consider using the naval turn resolution as a tactical advantage.
Last shout out to our new DM who has set up a super cool tone and is really putting a new movement and combat system to the test.
Plus everyone else is doing pretty great.

Awesome. I'll have to figure out what the best plan is for everyone. I can get up to 3 people up total if I use my one 5th level spell slot. But I was planning on using that to animate the ballista and bolts. And the DM said that I can't fly AND Animate Objects because animate takes concentration. But I wonder if I can cast FLY on others (which lasts 10min) then cast Animate and stay on the ship and help with Ballistas.
Thoughts? Also, who else wants to get into the air?
Also, thanks Joe!! I love this stuff!! Any new thoughts on a Zoom action D&D night?

Re: OoG during Pirates
Sorry bro:
Concentration
Some Spells require you to maintain Concentration in order to keep their magic active. If you lose Concentration, such a spell ends.
If a spell must be maintained with Concentration, that fact appears in its Duration entry, and the spell specifies how long you can concentrate on it. You can end Concentration at any time (no action required).
Normal activity, such as moving and attacking, doesn’t interfere with Concentration. The following factors can break concentration:
Casting another spell that requires Concentration. You lose Concentration on a spell if you cast another spell that requires Concentration. You can’t concentrate on two Spells at once.
Taking damage. Whenever you take damage while you are concentrating on a spell, you must make a Constitution saving throw to maintain your Concentration. The DC equals 10 or half the damage you take, whichever number is higher. If you take damage from multiple sources, such as an arrow and a dragon’s breath, you make a separate saving throw for each source of damage.
Being Incapacitated or killed. You lose Concentration on a spell if you are Incapacitated or if you die.
The GM might also decide that certain environmental phenomena, such as a wave Crashing over you while you’re on a storm--tossed ship, require you to succeed on a DC 10 Constitution saving throw to maintain Concentration on a spell.

The animate idea is brilliant Mike B!
New GM swinging for the fences on his first forum game, good stuff!
Great roleplay and combat from the whole team - this is a solid game!

Mike B - tactically speaking, I think it would be better if 3 of us were flying and could maneuver freely over the water. also this would prevent us all from eating a breath weapon or other AOE attack. also this would free a few of us from concentration checks due to crashing waves.
however, the animate ballistas is a very cool idea too and would increase our damage per round
your call of course

Re: OoG during Pirates
For casting I’ll say that as long as the caster is able to breath underwater there will be no penalties. Anyone holding their breath would not be able to cast a spell with a verbal component.
As for effects, I think that would have to be ajudicated on a case by case basis.

Not yet, but those are cards I have in my pocket. I was wondering about how something like Fire Bolt or Lightning works underwater. What about the verbal requirements of some spells?

Thatd be a perfect combo. On that note, it occurs to me that I could benefit from sitting down and thoroughly reading every one else's' character sheet. More opportunities for tactical synergy. Most/All these characters have fought with each other or in groups and its not unreasonable to assume a certain level of familiarity with utilizing/complimenting their strengths in battle.

Water is actually a better conductive medium than air for soundwaves. Verbal communication (with water breathing) can occur as normal.

Thanks much, that handles alot of potential issues that would bog gameplay down considerably.

After I get CON saves from the steam team I'll resolve vehicle movement and set the new map for next turn. We'll declare Tortugon's & The Grace's movements and go again.
Everybody good with how the ship combat movement is playing out so far?

As a Bonus Action, Tankard casts Spiritual Weapon, range 60ft (which is why I needed to know). Put it out in front of and adjacent to the Tortugon, please
Sorry, I should have been more specific - the hammer should be somewhere in row J, which would be in front of the Tortugon, thanks
Yep, I went back and placed it where Tortugon was at last round. This is where the spatial stuff gets a little wonky as I re-centered the Grace after all movement, including that 45 deg. rotation that Rob declared. I'm going to ask you to trust the professional map maker DM on this one
Sorry, I must be misunderstanding something then. Can you explain how this is wrong?
This was the map last round, when the hammer was cast. The hammer should be within 20ft of the turtle's butt this round, if was placed in row J on the first map. I know you spun the map because the boat turned, but it should still be in range to move this turn since the distance between hammer and turtle should remain the same.
I know you are trying to track everything and update the map as seldom as possible, but I think we probably need turn-by-turn map updates for character movement and effects. end of turn for boat\turtle seems fine.

Re: OoG during Pirates
I should have placed the Spirit Weapon when it was cast. That's my bad. Here's the previous turn's spacing, with the orange outline around all parties future position:
I then laid that orange outline on the map with the Grace centered and brought the turtle and the weapon to their new positions, then rotated them around their nearest corner to the Grace to true them back up to the grid, then centered them on the nearest grid square:
I can reasonably move the spirit weapon down to Row I if you feel that's more accurate, but after the rotation it fell in the middle of the two rows.

Its my fault for being a lazy player and not stating the exact location of the hammer in the first place. It honestly isn't a big deal, since it probably won't hit anyways, lol. I will be more precise in the future.

No worries. Thanks. Work-flow and this kind of visual presentation are what I do every day at the j.o.b. It helps having the pro-tools. If I dropped it into CAD we could do true 3D mapping, but that's WAY more work.

PROJECT TABLE comment was a joke, because I was making fun of the fact you were so focused on simulating a table, when I started out the convo hoping to spitball/dream a bit about some grand use cases, like we used to do frequently. You guys resisted every attempt made to brainstorm, did nothing to collaborate/develop the idea or even show any legitimate interest. What about any of that would suggest to me your ask was serious?
On that note, you really seem to be expressing some...energy of some sort towards me the last month or so. If there is something that needs hashing, either throw it out here or contact me.

@DM If I were to cast FLY which is no Concentration, just 1 Action and lasts 10min, then cast Animate Objects while in the air, the FLY spell wouldn't stop, right? Which means at 5th level I could cast it on 3 of us then do the Animate.
Also, general question. How long is a round of combat? When a spell last 1min, how many rounds of combat is that?
Thanks!!
