As long as your initiative permanently moves down, it seems fair.

Ready is perfect for reacting to something an enemy does, but Delay is better for coordinating with your allies, imo

I think this is a cool idea. You'd need a shipyard with a craftsman able to take on the job, and a bucket of money, but if that's a side quest the crew wants to take on I'd be happy to work that in.

I would think it would be rather difficult to attach to the superstructure without significant speed loss as well as maneuverability.

The party is firing on all cylinders. Well done on your first encounter GM. The animate item thing has me excited to see what Mike B has up his sleeve.

It is hard to figure given the ship, that adds another dimension to encounters.

Tactically speaking....

Water Breathing in round 1 was clutch to CYA

Fly on the party in round 1 would also be nice to give some mobility and spread out targets. Renda could fly over to engage at point blank, get the 2 casters airborne, etc

The Yondu special was amazing! nice idea Mike B

Solid gunnery by Sam, esp when given the reqs for Sneak Attack, hitting for ~50\shot is no joke!

FLY would be an excellent early choice

We should look at developing that weapon so Sam can throw effects as well as DMG from that gun

Matt, and everyone, I will play the part of the nay-sayer this time.

We have a party of 6 players already. Expanding this to more players is going to make it slow down to a crawl and make it almost unmanageable. One of the reasons, IMHO, that the Dragon Turtle was 'easy' to take down was the number of characters it's facing off against. This is not a criticism of the encounter nor Mike's GM efforts in any way (I've been very happy with all of this so far to be fair)

I'm not trying to be critical towards anyone; but this is getting a bit out of hand in my opinion.

As it is, I'm running a side game for two new people and Rob. One of them is our friend Jason Giglio and another is someone Rob and I have known since grade school, Brett. In any case, this message was basically so Chris lets them through registration ( he is protective of the forum against spam/bots - as well he should be) and was a courtesy to the rest of you, that you might welcome these friends aboard. They were a bit anxious about joining in and I am trying to provide a positive intro to gaming on the forum. I hope you'll all join me in giving them a sincere and respectful welcome to our community.

right on, I was only referring to the current Pirate campaign.

I obviously have no opinion as to other campaigns. That's not my call...

I tend to take a “more is merrier” approach, no objections to more members on the forum. I would prefer to cap the party size to current numbers In the Pirates campaign though, but if someone needs to drop out I’d be happy to take on one of the newer guys.

I say just play your character as you think he would act in the circumstance. Worst case scenario the crew will disown you and let the giant eat you

I get ya Mike. It's all good, play him how you want. Like I said, I would have done the same with Sam but he's afraid of big giants - and he's a bit obsessed with the loot the giant mentioned. lol

An observation:

Some things that work well at a table just don't translate into a similar play mechanic on the forum. Respectfully to all, I Dont think its a matter of risk to party or character as much as the risk of creating a major slowing in play. All for roleplaying, but splitting up the party in this format results in days and weeks of most everyone waiting around. What might be ten minutes in person at the table takes considerably longer when done play by post.

Maybe a little challenging, but recommend seeking a way to resolve the scouting in a narrative way that allows for the roleplay/action but doesn't take a long time and keeps the whole group/story moving together.

All due respect Matt, I don’t see why we can’t have multiple plot lines happening as long as people stay engaged and declare creative actions for their characters in a timely manner. Sjon, Hawkes, and Tankard are in a conversation with Grom and Willy has snuck off. Sam is looking for his chance to find out about the treasure. And Renda is...standing.

With a couple of exceptions I’m checking in every day, often multiple times per day, and resolving actions and declarations as they occur. I’m not sure what the issue with pacing is? I recognize I’m rusty as a DM, but I’m just as experienced a gamer as anyone on the forum and have been doing pbp for a couple years now. In my opinion the biggest detriment to game pace is folks not checking in every day. Not laying blame anywhere, but that’s my observation.

I wasn't aware of it really being a problem. I think this allows for more "flexible" gaming. But that's just me. It's 'side-board' stuff often enough but also ends up being interesting/important sometimes.

It was offered objectively, assumed as an exchange between people who respect each other discussing the mechanics of a game and differences in format...but as it clearly seems to have been taken as an attack. I'll desist further feedback.

Renda has been "just standing" because this week I drove my van over 1K miles through forest roads in 4 days, among other administrative nightmares Ive been literally been assigned to 6 different managers in 4 days, and yesterday had an anti government wingnut trap my vehicle against a forrest road gate and refuse to let me leave while he launched angry tinfoil hat voter fraud tirades at me - miles outside of signal range where I could possibly get any help, which was an inch from getting existentially bad for both of us involved. Its been a week, and despite being eyeball deep, was trying to do you and the party the respect of letting you know I was following along.

Let's have that happen in narrative order in game play. Currently it is the middle of the night and the crew is sleeping. Willy is snooping. I'll work it in to the events after day break unless its your intention to go down to the dock at night?
