Re: The grass is always Greenest....
It's no biggie Josh. The party got time to set up, so that means people can Ready an Action during the surprise round or cast a buff spell or use some other ability, basically for free. The party made a good decision to prepare an ambush and take up defensive positions, so I just want to make sure you get the mileage out of it, if you want it.
The Hoodies will pop the door 16, so many of the Readied Actions will jump in right after that from the surprise round. The party is heavily outnumbered, so you need the advantage of holding a defensive position with an ambush.
just waiting on Rob since Clyde might want to do something or Ready an Action
*sorry if that wasn't clear from the initial explanation of the scene, my bad

oh, all good. I wasn't meaning to be so argumentative. Sorry Alan.
If it matters, he's just waiting for a hostile target to shoot (that's still standing when he goes). So I guess that could count as a readied action?

Have to agree with Josh. Surprise Round doesn't necessitate a Readied Action.
Clyde has his hammer ready. He may cast a spell on his turn, or he may not.

Re: The grass is always Greenest....
Correct, a surprise round doesn't necessitate a Ready Action, but it was an option if anyone wanted to make one or cast a buff or do some other action. No big deal.
Ok, let's get this party started!
During the Surprise round, Quain, Moon and Gorlug declared Readied actions.
at 17, Quain is still waiting
at 16, the Hoodies bust open the door with their makeshift battering ram. The old church door cracks and splinters of wood fly into the lobby.
map updated with open door
this triggers both Quain and Gorlug's Readied Actions!
Quain 17 (firebolt on enemy seen in range) *can see both
Gorlug 4 (javelin on nearest enemy in LoS when door breaks) *can only see the one on the right at L-20
Readied Actions interrupt the regular flow of the round, so Matt and Alan may make their attack rolls now!
then the Hoodies will finish their turns
Ok, let's get this party started!

The hoodie on the right gets a javelin as a welcome present upon opening the door to Chauntea's Temple! He howls in pain and surprise.

The 2 hoodies decide, upon taking damage from just opening the door, that they want to rethink their approach. Perhaps the temple isn't full of scared church mice afterall?
They step to the side and yell at the kobolds,
Right Hoodie: "Get in there you scrubs!"
Left Hoodie: "There's one behind the door!"
*their Action was using the battering ram, so they only had Move left
map update
Clyde is up
he has LoS on the left Hoodie and 2 kobolds (yellow arrows)
LoS - is drawing an uninterrupted line from any point on your square to any point on the enemy square, partial obstructions may provide a cover bonus

The Hoodie burns up, robes and all!
I added a broken yellow line to represent the splintered church doors. Consider those 2 squares as Difficult Terrain (double movement cost) to pass into\out of the church
Titus is up and he LoS (just barely) to 1 kobold currently, he can of course move before\during\after taking an Action

The masked leader spits blood from the hit and glares at Titus from under his draconic mask.
The kobolds rush forward in a swarm. The party can hear excited YIPPING and YELPING as the lizard folk charge the Temple of Chauntea. The first one passes the threshold of the door, triggering Moon's Readied Action
Moon - take your Readied Attack
then I will continue the Kobolds' turns

Re: The grass is always Greenest....
The first and bravest kobold, Larry, heard the orders from his human overlords and obeyed with zeal.
Secretly, he wanted to retire from a life of thuggery. He dreamed of wearing a fine silk suit and crooning in a tavern somewhere, maybe even Greenest, if times had been different. But alas....
Larry charges through the door only to run into Moon's staff. Moon plays samuri-baseball with the small lizard's head. The kobold goes flying out of the temple door almost as fast as he went running inside. Thus ends the all-too-brief tale of Leisure-suit Larry the Lounge-Lizard.
The rest of the kobolds charge into the fray!
One kobold attacks Moon with a series of quick cuts and thrusts with his dagger. Moon deflects the attacks with his staff.
A second kobold makes it inside and joins his friend. Moon becomes overwhelmed as the two begin working together using Pack Tactics!
Pack Tactics: The kobold has advantage on an Attack roll against a creature if at least one of the kobold's allies is within 5 ft. of the creature and the ally isn't Incapacitated.
The second kobold is able to connect with his small dagger for 2 slashing damage!
The other kobolds don't make it inside, but one has LoS on Titus. He spins his sling around and whips a stone that just barely misses Titus' head. They rest have no targets. One of them is slowly wading through the pond, he isn't very brave at all and is in no rush to die next.
It appears the other patrol that was circling around the Temple is starting to appear at the edge of the map! 5 more kobolds and a large crocodile-looking (ambush drake) thing arrive to join the battle.

Moon does his best Darth Maul impersonation. His staff is a blur of spins and strikes. The leap is the final exclamation on a whirlwind of death. Moon ends at 16-N with a flourish and 2 corpses at his feat.
The Ambush Drake strains at the chain around its neck, eager for a fight. It turns on its kobold handler and chomps him dead in a single bite. Now free, it rushes around the corner of the fence towards the fight. It hungers for a bigger meal.

Gorlug can't see the masked man, sorry. He is behind an interior wall currently and only has LoS diagonally towards the SE corner. He could target the injured N-19 Hoodie or the L-21 kobold. The two kobolds would provide 1/2 cover to masked man, if Gorlug moves out.

The Javelin has a range of 30/120
Range. A weapon that can be used to make a ranged attack has a range shown in parentheses after the ammunition or thrown property. The range lists two numbers. The first is the weapon's normal range in feet, and the second indicates the weapon's long range. When attacking a target beyond normal range, you have disadvantage on the attack roll. You can't attack a target beyond the weapon's long range.
please roll another time, as Gorlug is currently 45 ft away from the masked man and has Disadvantage on the roll

Gorlug's javelin sails just wide of the mark. He had to adjust his throw for both range and the kobold obstacles in its flight path. Gorlug ducks back behind the wall for safety.
at 3, Masked dude just watched a javelin come too close for comfort and decides to get outta the way. He moves to the side of the broken door and Readies a scimitar attack if any enemy becomes adjacent to him. (only the kobolds have ranged weapons, bunch of dummies) He barks orders to the group outside the wall, "Go around back, you lot!"

Moon continues his deadly counter attacks on the kobold pack! He nails (carpenter jokes) the first one on the head, dropping him instantly.
Critical!
Moon has a training montage flashback. Moon recalls a board breaking exercise he did as a child. His master would hold a pine board with only his finger and thumb. Moon had to kick fast enough to break the board without knocking it out of his master's hand first. He failed many times, until he developed the speed and accuracy to hit the board precisely in the center with enough velocity to break it.
Moon snaps the kobolds neck as easily as he did a wooden board.
He then runs across the opening, but only sees the masked man on the left side.
Moon just missed seeing the Ambush Drake wheel around the corner and charge towards the temple.

The kobold claws and scratches in vain at Gorlug, perhaps he is just a nuisance. Gorlug attacks the masked leader but his attacks are deflected by his skill with a scimitar. Gorlug senses a grin behind the draconic mask as he counter attacks with many brutal swings (2 attack rolls) of his own.

when you use Ready, you are using an Action to set up an Action at a later time. You can only use that specific Action as an interrupt, so you cannot move or use a Bonus Action at that later (triggered) time.
If you were 5th level and got to make 2 attack rolls as part of the Attack Action, then yes, you could swing twice. If you mean can you use your off-hand as a Bonus Action, then no.

Agreed!
+1 inspiration point for Cylde
Clyde takes up a fortifying position next to Gorlug. Gorlug, Moon and Titus feel a cold presence wash over them as the god known as The Vigilan One grants them increased focus in combat.

The green orc on the left is Gorlug and the bearded dwarf on the right is Clyde.
Titus backs up his buddies at the gates.
at 9, the kobolds outside continue their flanking maneuver around the outer stone wall. The party can hear high pitched yelps of excitement from the back of the temple.
