    cheers Clyde comes from a long line of stubborn-minded dwarf folk that don't scare easily.


    About a minute passes in the stream, though it feels more like an hour.  The villagers alternate between cowering and searching the sky for death's return.  The priestess makes a weak effort to calm her flock, though she is clearly terrified herself.  Death does not visit this hour.

    Titus and Clyde note that the dragon made a low circle around the top of the keep before blasting it with lightning. In the flash of light, they are pretty sure they saw a few bodies fall from the parapet.  

    Once the Fear passes, the party continues down the stream and around the village. The villagers are silently grateful for the cover of night.

    Soon, Titus spots what looks like a large storm drain up ahead.  It dumps into the stream from the direction of the Keep.

    Despite having vague visions what might be flying beasts from a long ago memory sticking in the recesses of his emotions, Moon holds a fist up to stop the group, holds a finger to his lips as he moves up ahead to get a look inside the drainage pipe to assess.

    Stealth roll to move ahead unseen
    1d20 (2) + 5 = 7 (he stumbles as he can't quite get the dragon memories out of his head, then he cringes as others might or might not see)

    Perception roll to look through drainage pipe
    1d20 (19) + 4 = 23

    Embarrassed(like when a cat mis-judges a leap onto the counter, bounces back to the ground and walks away), he moves back to report what he sees. Clutz!

    DM: what is the time frame of LoS on dragon? Seems like he flies over town for a blast or two at the keep, then out of sight (over the horizon?), only to return minutes later?

    Clyde maintains a grim face as he walks along with the terrified townsfolk. The rookie cleric of Helm at least realizes the appearance of bravery is sometimes as important as having the actual heart of bravery.

    He strokes his beard when they find the tunnel. "Perhaps this is a secret way into the keep?"

    Moon tries to creep forward but his foot slips on a wet river rock. In the darkeness, and given the raid, it goes unnoticed by the villagers. Moon reports back that the tunnel is wet and dark, but empty as far as he can see. He does find a locked iron gate just a few feet inside. Moon wonders why someone would lock a sewer drain.... perhaps Clyde is onto something?

    Clyde is correct - the dragon swoops over a random part of town, spreading its Fear. It takes a pass at the Keep and blasts it with lightning before swooping up and out of sight. If Clyde had to guess, it returns every couple minutes.

    The tunnel doesn't smell nearly as bad as Titus expected. It doesn't smell good, but the flow is minimal currently.

    Gorlug gives the villagers a pep-talk. They seem willing to follow him into the unknown.


    Would anyone like to try a lock pick (dex + thieves tool prof if you have it) or a str check to break it?
    if you don't have actual thieves tools, it will be at disadvantage with improvised tools.

    I always thought the background came with the tools, huh, guess I was wrong


    Go ahead and make a STR + Prof (thieves tools) for the crowbar. It is a tool when used to break to a lock, imo.

    It will break the lock, so it won't be reusable again, but better than trying to break an iron gate with a warhammer

    That is actually enough!


    Years of corrosion and neglect have rusted the lock. Even if correctly "picked" with Thieves Tools, it will usually be rusted shut.

    Titus braces his foot on the iron gate and pulls hard. There is a loud CRACK as the old lock breaks into many rusty pieces. Titus' effort also seems to have dislodged the iron gate itself.

    It is clear that none of the raiders, nor anyone else, have passed this way for a long time.


    Going in? marching order? any other Actions?

    The party enters the dank sewers.  The flow is low, not much more than a moving puddle under your boots.  It is dark inside the tunnels.  It was nighttime outside, so there isn't even any light coming in from the outside.  

    Moon, Gorlug and Quain have 60ft of Darkvision, which treats darkness as Dim light.  

    Dim light, also called shadows, creates a lightly obscured area. An area of dim light is usually a boundary between a source of bright light, such as a torch, and surrounding darkness. The soft light of twilight and dawn also counts as dim light. A particularly brilliant full moon might bathe the land in dim light.

    lightly obscured =  In a lightly obscured area, such as dim light, patchy fog, or moderate foliage, creatures have disadvantage on Wisdom (Perception) checks that rely on sight.

    For everyone else, you are effectively BLINDED in the tunnel due to the darkness.

    A heavily obscured area—such as Darkness, opaque fog, or dense foliage—blocks vision entirely. A creature effectively suffers from the Blinded condition (see Conditions ) when trying to see something in that area.

    Blinded

       A blinded creature can’t see and automatically fails any ability check that requires sight.
       Attack rolls against the creature have advantage, and the creature’s Attack rolls have disadvantage.




    I am providing the map because some members can partially see in the Dim light.  For everyone else, you cannot see your hand in front of your face.

    The tunnel goes straight ahead for the 60ft that Moon can see.  It appears as if it widens about 20 ft ahead.

    The villagers huddle in tight. Each one puts a hand on the shoulder in front of them, forming a trembling chain.

    Moon pulls out his tinderbox and 3 torches, lights them and hands one to Titus. “Here you go buddy,, no magic necessary”. He looks back to priestess (hands one to her) and hands one to a villager, “is that a little better? Pass the last one back.”

    Clyde is a mountain dwarf and last I heard, mountain dwarves have darkvision 60'.

    Clyde walks behind the priestess and ahead of the villagers.

    He picks up a pebble or stone and casts Light spell on it. Then he tosses the lit pebble into the center of the room ahead.

    *If there aren't any stones, Clyde casts Light on a gold coin and hands it to Titus.

    Duration: 1 hour
    Classes: Bard, Cleric, Sorcerer, Wizard
    You touch one object that is no larger than 10 feet in any dimension. Until the spell ends, the object sheds bright light in a 20-foot radius and dim light for an additional 20 feet. The light can be colored as you like. Completely covering the object with something opaque blocks the light. The spell ends if you cast it again or dismiss it as an action.
    If you target an object held or worn by a hostile creature, that creature must succeed on a Dexterity saving throw to avoid the spell.

    The light is colored red so as to be less harsh on the eyes of the villagers (no mechanical effect).

    Moon hands out torches.  The villagers are more content with a source of both light and heat.   Basic needs bring comfort in distressing times.  They settle down, but the calm only lasts for a moment.  Clyde enchants a small stone with Helm's divine presence and chucks it ahead into the clearing.  It gives off a warm red light, much like Helm's forges.  

    However, it also disturbs 2 swarms of rats that nest in the alcove!

    Moon rounds the corner on the vermin and does his own version of Miyagi-do  Sweep on, sweep off.
    However, Moon finds hitting a swarm to be more difficult as the tiny creatures are constantly moving.

    Gorlug elbows and jostles his way through the throng of villagers.  He barely makes it to the edge of the light, just time for the RATS! to envelop him and Moon.  The swarm can and must occupy the same space as their targets.   Dozens of tiny claws and fangs rip at the 2 heroes....

    Both swarms fail to penetrate the armor of Gorlog or the swift defenses of Moon.
